Late last year Nicalis, Inc released their indie crossover fighting game, Blade Strangers. The title had a number of series, with some odd omissions, though it seems 1001 Spikes might be making an appearance.
Earlier today Nicalis, Inc sent out a tweet, with a picture of Aban Hawkins, main character of 1001 Spikes, countering Cave Story’s Curly. “Aban performs a perfectly timed Counter vs Curly in #CrystalCri–wait, what!?! This isn’t #CrystalCrisis,” tweeted Nicalis, Inc.
Since Aban Hawkins is already confirmed for their upcoming title Crystal Crisis, it makes sense that they’d bring him over to Blade Strangers. This could also mean that 1001 Spikes will be releasing soon for Nintendo Switch. The title was originally announced with Cave Story back in 2017, the latter of which released on June 20, 2017, and has been in limbo ever since. This does coincide with a tweet a couple days ago confirming they’re still working on the title.
“It’s still cookin’!,” tweeted Nicalis, Inc.
This might just be an over assumption, as it isn’t the first or last time something like this happened, but it’s good to see Blade Strangers is seemingly getting more content. This also opens the door for other characters, such as Ittle from Ittle Dew or possibly Remi from the upcoming RemiLore.
Beyond the basic tease, no additional information was given. It’s possible Aban Hawkins might be free content, in hopes of stimulating additional sales, a possible freebie with purchase of 1001 Spikes or more likely a paid character. Whatever the answer might be, it will be interesting to see how they implement his harsh trap based mechanics to a fighting style. It has the potential to be either really interesting or disastrously bad. Whatever the path might be, let’s hope it’s the first of many characters that build Blade Strangers into, if nothing else, the ultimate Nicalis fighting game.
