As we are nearing the release of Persona 5 Royal in Japan for the PlayStation 4, there has been a confusion and mix-up on the save data and DLC compatibility with Persona 5. Today, Atlus revealed a short F.A.Q addressing those concerns.
For those who have played Persona 5 and wanting to use their saved data on Persona 5 Royal when it launches in Japan this October or soon in North America, there will be no carrying over of data but instead, there will be certain things that gets unlocked and this include a useful bonus at the beginning of the game.
As far as DLC goes for Persona 5, those who have purchased it and will be picking up Persona 5 Royal will be able to continue using them by re-purchasing the content at “one content for 10 yen.”
Here’s the full frequently asked questions by Atlus:
Does save data from Persona 5 carry over to Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is based on the game systems of Persona 5, but is a rebirth with numerous new elements such as new characters and events implemented from the beginning of the game. Since it is a different experience from playing the original Persona 5, carrying over save data for things such as stats and the Persona Compendium is not possible. However, if you have save data for Persona 5, you will receive a useful bonus at the beginning of the game. (This will work with both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 save data. If you are using PlayStation 3 save data, upload the save data to the network (cloud) and play Persona 5 Royal from the same PlayStation Network account to receive the bonus.)
Will Persona 5 Royal release for platforms other than PlayStation 4?
There are currently no plans.
Will there be a digital edition?
There will be. Pre-orders are available now on the PlayStation Store. The contents of the physical and digital editions are the same.
Will there be store-specific bonuses?
Those are currently in preparation. As soon as they are ready, you will be able to see the different bonuses per store via our Buyer’s Guide.
What about the downloadable content I purchased for Persona 5?
Due to commercial reasons, you will be able to continue using the downloadable content purchased for Persona 5 in Persona 5 Royal by re-purchasing the content at “one content for 10 yen.” (This applies to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 version downloadable content.)
Persona 5 Royal will be released for PlayStation 4 on October 31 in Japan and 2020 in the West.
