Darkest Dungeon was something of a surprise hit. The title came out of nowhere, with a lot of confusing mechanics meant to work against the player, yet working through all the problems made for an exciting gameplay experience. Following the success of the original, a couple DLC expansions were released, with Red Hook Studio deciding to release a sequel sometime in the future.
This was revealed in an interview with PCGamer, along with a number of details about the upcoming title. Darkest Dungeon II will have the spirit of the original, though it be its own experience.
Red Hook Studio confirmed it will retain the same signature combat system, though it will have a number of improvements in both presentation and mechanics. This came with a comment that the meta game will change, so we will likely see a massive shift in tactics or plans when the sequel releases. They also confirmed that while it might be different, it will share a lot of the same DNA, making it perfect for the early access scene.
To go along with the reveal and interview, Red Hook Studio released a trailer, found below:
The trailer itself reveals a couple things about the upcoming title. These include, but are not limited to, the beloved classes making a return and a lot of snow. This means the this title might have something to do with a mountain area, winter time or something else entirely. The trailer also confirms Wayne June will return to offer his haunting voice to the title.
While a release date, price and a lot of other information wasn’t revealed, it is nice to see where the series is going. Given this one has the subtitle ‘The Howling End,’ it offers a number of haunting possibilities. But, for the mean time, the trailer will have to do.
