Every year around June we have the E3 gaming event where nearly all of the big gaming publishers reveal details of all of their latest video games and hardware devices. Well E3 2019 will feel a little bit empty because Sony has officially announced that it’s skipping next year’s event.
This will be the first time in history that the Sony PlayStation brand will not be attending an E3 event of any kind. It’s also interesting to note that Sony is not holding the PlayStation Experience event later this year either. Anyway, you can read Sony’s statement below as posted by Game Informer.
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
Holding big press conferences at expos are an expensive endeavor most of the time so Sony might be wanting to save some money. Not to mention the PS4 generation will soon meet its end with the PlayStation 5 rumored to be released as early as the year 2020.
It’s not too surprising to see Sony skipping E3 2019 since it will probably just showcase the game old upcoming games. We already know Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II are releasing sometime in the near future. These games are expected to be the last AAA PS4 exclusives before the PS5 console hits.
Fans don’t have to worry too much about Sony’s absence because both Nintendo and Microsoft have confirmed that they will be returning to E3 2019 as expected.
