Even though Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a new release coming out on more platforms, Lara Croft was still unable to dethrone Marvels’ Spider-Man at the top of the UK gaming charts.
Marvel’s Spider-Man debuted to be the biggest launch of 2018 thus far selling more copies in its first week compared to Far Cry 5 and even God of War. Sales dropped by only 44% compared to last week and this was still high enough to beat Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s debut.
As reported by GameIndustry.biz, Shadow of the Tomb Raider debuted at number 2 on the all formats chart. Even though sales for the game were 25% higher than Rise of the Tomb Raider’s debut, it’s still a disappointing effort since this game was out on more platforms. As you might remember, Rise of the Tomb Raider launched as an Xbox One exclusive back in November 2015.
If we compare sales to the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot, sales of Shadow of the Tomb Raider are down a whopping 70% from that game. Lara Croft’s latest game sold more copies on PS4 copied to the Xbox One version.
GameIndustry.biz speculates the lower sales for Tomb Raider could be due to the rise of digital sales. It also did not help that the game launched just one week after the well received Spider-Man video game!
The only other new entry in the top 10 was NBA 2K19 debuting at number 3 on the charts. Unit sales are almost identical to last year so 2K Games has nothing to worry about. It’s more than likely NBA 2K19 will have bigger sales in North America.
