For the past several weeks now, the best selling game in the world (including the UK) has been the PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man. Well now the game has been dethroned in the UK thanks to the release of EA Sports‘ FIFA 19 video game out on all platforms.
As reported by GameIndustry.biz, FIFA 19 became the biggest video game launch in the UK in 2018. This is not very surprising since football/soccer is the most popular sport in the UK and a lot of casual gamers buy the game every year too. The game is likely going to stay on the charts for the next 52 weeks until the inevitable FIFA 20 video game comes out sometime next year in the same month.
The report does note that sales of FIFA 19 are 25% lower than that of FIFA 18 which came out last year. This is seen as a slight disappointment, although it’s worth mentioning the data only collects sales from physical units. It’s possible more people decided to download the game digitally this year instead.
64% of copies were for the PS4 version while 35% was on the Xbox One. The remaining 1% was sales for the game over on the Nintendo Switch.
As a result of FIFA, Marvel’s Spider-Man had to settle for second place for the first time ever in the UK. The game has been selling well and should continue to be in the charts for the foreseeable future.
The only other new release in the top 10 was Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles IV which only debuted at number 9. 54% of sales were on the PS4, while 39% for the Nintendo Switch. Only 7% of copies were on Xbox One.
