A few months ago it was reported that the Detective Pikachu movie was going to be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures. However, now it has been reported that Warner Bros. is now taking over distribution rights.
This new report comes exclusively from The Hollywood Reporter. This will be the first time since 2013 that Legendary Pictures is teaming up with Warner Bros. to distribute a big budget Hollywood movie.
While no official reason has been given, speculation is that Legendary hasn’t been too happy with Universal’s record this year. One reason is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Skyscraper currently disappointing at the Box Office. That said, Universal still made a lot of money from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
The movie studio change will not affect production for the film. Detective Pikachu is still keeping its May 10th, 2019 release date.
