When Gears of War 5 was announced at E3 2018, many people were surprised to notice that the game was just shortened to “Gears 5” only. Well developer The Coalition has explained why the name of the franchise has been shortened.
In a recent tweet, The Coalition Head Rod Fergusson posted the reason for the name change. He said: “Gears of War” is still the franchise name but now that we’re doing a family of products it made more sense to shorten the titles down – Gears Pop, Gears Tactics & Gears 5. Plus we always just call it Gears anyway so it feels good to simplify.”
The other games are spin-offs that won’t need the full name of the franchise. Maybe the developer also wants to differentiate itself from the original trilogy made by Epic Games.
Gears 5 will be released in 2019 for Xbox One and Windows 10. It will be the first in the series to feature a female as the main character as Kait Diaz takes center stage.
