The two kings of the Battle Royale genre are PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite at the moment. However, Treyarch hopes it can trump the competition with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s own Battle Royale mode called ‘Blackout’.
Finder had a chance to interview Black Ops 4 game designer Matt Scronce and he says the studio hopes to do Battle Royale better than its competition. He said: “Oh, that’s how we like it. We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t think we could do it best and better than everybody else. We’ve got a huge library of content, ten years of history, we’ve got the best gunplay out there, we’ve got the best movement, so we’re not too worried about it. Honestly, we’re just worried about making this damn thing as fun as possible“.
He also said that the Battle Royale mode will only have one map available at launch, but it will be hundreds of more times bigger than any normal map in COD history. He does not want to say if the game will have loot boxes, but we should find out more information in the coming weeks.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 12th, 2018. It will come with Multiplayer, Zombies and the aforementioned Blackout mode. It will be the first COD game in recent memory without a single player campaign.
