Video games are looking bigger and better thanks to new technology, however this does mean game budgets are exploding at a fast pace. It sounds like this year’s release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider is going to be pretty expensive for a AAA single player video game.
Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi was interviewed by GameIndustry.biz and he explained how the cost of AAA single player video games are getting bigger as time goes by. Unlike multiplayer games, single player video games don’t have the luxury to monetize content as much as full online experiences.
Anfossi then estimated the cost of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and it’s huge. He said: “Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and other different AAA single-player games, cost $75 million to $100 million. And that’s production only; it’s close to $35 million on the promotion. So there’s definitely a pressure. We cannot avoid it. But, at the same time, for us to have these incubation projects and to try small things… that gives us the opportunity to test, prepare and secure some stuff, and remove some risk.”
Anfossi did say single player video games are not dying as seen with God of War, but he just wants a new model in order for them to be more profitable. The new Tomb Raider game is coming out on September 14th, 2018 for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
