Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto V back in 2013, although the game is still firing up the UK gaming charts. In a surprise twist, the game became number one this week in 2018. It managed to beat out lots of other new releases that came out in 2017.
As reported by Game Industry Biz, Grand Theft Auto V reached to the top of the UK gaming charts after 226 weeks it first went on sale many years ago for the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
The reason the game came back at number 1 is due to some retailers discounting it. The game was ported to PS4 and Xbox One a year after the original release with a PC port also coming afterwards.
Other big hitters such as Call of Duty: WWII and FIFA 18 had to settle for second and third place respectively. There were no new releases in this week which is why GTA came out on top. The first big releases aren’t coming until January 26th, 2018 when Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter World drop in.
It’s still amazing to me how GTA V is still able to sell lots of copies in the UK. You’d think by now the entire country would have bought the game already. It’s possible the PS4 and Xbox One versions helped since most people may have sold their PS3s and Xbox 360s to get the newer consoles.
Not to mention GTA Online is still getting updated with million of players still playing it. The GTA series is no longer just a single player experience, so the lifespan of the fifth game has expanded. It will be interesting to see if the continued success of the game means a Nintendo Switch version is on the way. It could happen since Rocktar recently released LA Noire for the Switch,
