Sadly, it looks like you won’t be able to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with Japanese audio and English subtitles. It appears it’s one or the other and that’s it.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer, Eiji Aonuma, confirmed this via an interview with IGN Portugal. He said: “Unfortunately, it is not possible to play with English text, for example, and Japanese voices.”
He did say that you can change the language of the Nintendo Switch to Japanese, although this will change the game to Japanese audio and Japanese subtitles. This means you have to understand Japanese to play the game in Japanese basically.
This is sad news since some people prefer Japanese voice acting over English voice acting. Whether or not an update patch will be released in the near future for dual audio remains to be seen.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases on March 3rd, 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles.
