Final Fantasy XIV – How to use your Chocobo in battle

In the world of Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV, the Chocobos have a lot of uses aside from being a mount that you can use to travel from one place to another. In fact, they are useful in battle as well, especially if you are questing by yourself.

Unfortunately, when you get your Chocobo at level 20, they can’t be used in battle at the moment as you will need to meet certain requirements again and do a quest that unlocks it. If you are interested in using your Chocobo in battle aside from mounting them, you need to have the following:

– Must be at least level 30
– Must finish the quest ‘My Feisty Little Chocobo’

Talk to the girl and she’ll ask you that Luquelot of Brentbranch Meadow will be the one who is able to teach you how to use your Chocobo in battle.

Buy Gysahl Greens

Talk to Luquelot inside the Chocobo Barn and he’ll tell you all sorts of new information that you need to know about Chocobos. Well, in order to use your Chocobo, you need to have an item called ‘Gysahl Greens’.

Just near the barn, you will see a Garden where you can get one Gysahl Green. Pick it up and return to Luquelot.

Try out your new companion

Upon giving Luquelot the Gysahl Green, the ability to use your Chocobo as a companion will be unlocked. Before you leave, he’ll ask you take down three Brood Ziz.

Go to the location on your map and try using your Chocobo as a companion. To bring him out, open the Character menu and you should see a Chocobo Icon. Select it and you will be able to see your Chocobo’s stats. From that screen, you should see the Gysahl Green icon. Drag it to your action bar and use it.

After taking down the Brood Ziz, return to Luquelot to complete the quest. From here on, you are free to use your Chocobo anytime… but you need a Gysahl Green every time you summon it.

Where to get Gysahl Green?

Now that you are able to use your Chocobo as a companion, make sure you stock up some Gysahl Greens. The only store I found that are selling them is located in the New Girdania. The merchant should be located near the big Aetheryte.

Note: Every time you use a Chocobo, they will get experience points like you do. The more you use them and the more rank/level they get, they more competent they get in battle. Make sure to always use them!
