Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Review

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon

Post-Game Stuff
In addition to having a number of story missions to complete, you can also elect to take over enemy based and complete additional side missions. The first type of missions are rescue, where you need to save someone from a few soldiers. These can be done in stealth or like a true ’80 s man with guns a blazing. It really doesn’t matter how you do it, only that the target isn’t… completely dead. The other type involves hunting, which generally require you to kill a certain enemy/animal with the assigned weapon. These aren’t as much fun as the hostage missions, though they can be pretty amusing, like the one where you need to kill a shark with a grenade. Besides missions to complete, there are also a number of TVs, VHS tapes and notes to find scattered across the island. Besides being fairly easy to find, they do motivate you to see everything in the world of Blood Dragon.

NOT

Extremely Short
When it comes to open world games, you typically expect a playtime closer to an RPG, although you won’t find that here. Not only was I able to beat the game in under six hours, I also got every trophy. This meant I found every collectible, killed every animal, maxed out my level, completed every side quest and beat the game on hard with no reason to relive the experience. This is a real shame, since I wasn’t even rushing to complete the game, it just so happened to work out that fast. I suppose people that like to explore will get a little more bang for their buck, but keep in mind that this game can probably be completed in 3 or 4 hours. Before you assume this is a bad thing, I never felt like the concept got stale (though some of the one liners were getting old), so this might be fore the best.

VERDICT

jps_ed_choice_120x120Regardless of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon being a short game, it executes the concept perfectly. I constantly found myself laughing at how over the top some scenes are, plus the combat was good enough to make the experience enjoyable. Sure this game won’t appeal to everyone, but it’s pretty evident that this game was crafted with love, over trying to cash in on nostalgia. So do yourself a favor and go relive the 1980s with Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon today!
