The PlayStation 3 is readying itself for its next software update, v4.30, as revealed by the PlayStation Blog. Next Tuesday, October 23rd, this new update will go live and the system’s Trophies are the main focus.
Upon downloading the update, the Trophy Collection will move out from under the “Game” section of the XMB. It will now fall under Network. Furthermore, trophies earned for Vita titles will now appear on your PS3. Lastly, while viewing your trophies, a mini version of your PSN ID card will appear in the top-right of the screen showing your progress toward the next level (as you can see in the image above).
Life with PlayStation will no longer be accepting new users following the 4.30 update. This is due to the fact that Sony’s participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home is coming to an end in November. Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had the following to say regarding PS3 owners’ participation:
The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).
I’m sure “secret” features will be uncovered after the update’s release, but for now this is what to expect on Tuesday.
