Etna – Disgaea Hour of Darkness
Likelihood: Very Likely
Believe it or not, Nippon Ichi has been on the Playstation since the original. Since then, we’ve seen a number of fantastic RPG’s from them. While most were only modestly popular, they really found their niche with Disgaea. Since this is also their 20th anniversary, this would be an amazing way to celebrate their milestone on the Playstation platforms.
Daniel Fortesque – MediEvil
Likelihood: Very Likely
Sony has offered various games over a vast number of genres, but very few fall into the hack /slash range. While Kratos is most peoples go to character, Sir Dan would be perfect for a fighting game. Not only does he have an interesting design, but he would be very easy to make a move set for. However, it’s been five years since we’ve seen a MediEvil game. Regardless, skipping out on him would certainly be a missed opportunity.
Toan – Dark Cloud
Likelihood: Unlikely
One problem with having so many exclusives, is the fact that some will die off. Dark Cloud was loved by fans, though the series didn’t really expand very far. With only one sequel, fans have been in the dark for a while. While it’s quite clear Level 5 has moved onto other projects, Toan would certainly spice up the cast.
Unamed Warrior – Demon Souls
Likelihood: Possible
Despite being the spiritual successor of Kings Field, Demon Souls really found its place on the Playstation 3. Not only was the Japanese release highly successful, but the demand from other regions was overwhelming. Considering there were a number of weapons, magic’s and miracles, it would most likely be an easy transition to a fighting game. Also, who wouldn’t love playing on a Demon Souls stage?!
Crash — Crash Bandicoot
Long before Naughty Dog was busy crafting Nathan Drake’s adventures, they were responsible for Crash Bandicoot on the first Playstation console. Imagine the once huge Sony star tornado spinning through other notable characters while an Aku Aku mask hovers around him. Better yet, imagine that taking place on a stage with Doctor Neo Cortex sneaking off with Tawna in the background. Crash seems like the perfect addition and, although we haven’t seen him on our home consoles since 2007, now seems like as good a time as any for him to make a triumphant return.
Spyro — Spyro the Dragon
If you remember playing Crash, then chances are you remember the little purple dragon, Spyro. With his fire breath, charge attacks and the additional maneuvers brought on by more recent iterations, Spyro is ready to start roasting hides again. Even his dragonfly follower, Sparx, could follow him around to really add to the nostalgic feel. Once again, this is one of those series that would also provide an excellent theme for one of the stages (fingers crossed that it includes Moneybags losing his gems). We haven’t forgotten about Spyro, so let’s hope Sony hasn’t either.
Kazuma Kiryu — Yakuza (also known as Ryu Ga Gotoku)
What would this battle royale be without the Dragon of Dojima kicking butt and taking names? Here’s a Playstation exclusive character who’s well versed in the art of fighting. In fact, there are few that can match this ex-Yakuza’s capabilities in a fight. I can see Sony pulling Kazuma away from his orphanage and the countless street punks to pit him against some other heavy hitters. As I’m almost certain (or maybe I’m just really hopeful) that Kazuma will be a part of this brawl, the only real question is will he walk into the fray full clothed or will he tear off his upper body clothing, as he tends to, in order to show off his legendary tattoo?
Cole MacGrath – infamous
Likelihood: All but Confirmed
Being a part of one of the new IP’s this gen, Cole has certainly proven to be popular. With two retail games and a PSN title, we’ve seen a lot of Cole MacGrath. Additionally, with the release of Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom came up with an interesting move list for him. Considering he works fine there, it only makes sense for him to appear here too.
Helghast Trooper – Killzone
Likelihood: All but Confirmed
Despite Radec being a more iconic choice, it makes sense for the basic solider to be represented. Considering there are a number of classes with their own skills like turning invisible, spawning weapons, plus more, it would only make sense for them to appear. Finally, simply having a stage on Helghan would be fun.
Kevin Butler – Sackboy Kart Racing / Spokesperson
Likelihood: ????
Sony was never a company known for their commercial spots, but this all changed with their MLB spot. By introducing the character Kevin Butler, it seemed like Sony stuck gold. After a number of successful spots, the VP of everything gained a huge following. Considering no other character could fill the role of a boss, this might be Kevin’s time to shine. Not to mention he was called back for the Long Live Play campaign.
While there are many other fantastic choices, we sadly can’t mention them all. Naturally Drake, Ratchet, and Jak are almost certainly in it, but this will ideally lead to niche characters coming back. Sure we got Parappa, but weird niche characters are what make these games amazing.
