A few days ago, we reported that Modern Warfare 3 May Start Dangerous Trend. Well, it seems that Gran Turismo will be joining in this disturbing trend that I am going to start calling the “Nickle and Dime DLC” trend.
The creator of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, has announced that owners of Gran Turismo 5 can expect new DLC for the game as often as every two months from now on. In a recent interview with IGN he revealed how the team seperates content between DLC and GT6, and also the current content plasn for GT5.
“I think what really will be the separating factor is; something that we can’t update through a DLC is something that obviously has to be saved for GT6. Things that we can provide through DLC we will, so that’s really the market difference.”
Yamauchi also mentioned that fans can expect new Gran Turismo 5 DLC every two months from now on:
”It’s been about a year since we’ve released the game and in the interim we’ve had about 15 updates that were performed on the game. These set up the basic platform for the system. Now that we have that out of the way, we’re ready to release more expansions and content to add to the game. I think that will include cars and trucks that we’ll be releasing maybe once every two months or so from here on out. What we do from here on is also really dependent on the reaction of the users to this first DLC that we just released because this is the first one. Now we have the feedback from our customers and we’ll see how that will affect what we will do from here.”
I find this to be a very disturbing trend; I mean, I understand that fans of the franchise have wanted more content for a long time now, but if this kind of DLC distribution takes off and other developers start adapting the model to their games, we could end up having hundreds of dollars nickled and dimed away out of us and we wouldn’t even notice.

November 12, 2011 at 12:23 AMPersonally I would say the trend started years ago with Littlebigplanet. That being said, while I do support some DLC, I think much of it is nickle/diming . I think its said that many games have ADDITIONAL content, before we even get out of the gate.
We have the constant preorder items that are removed from the start (or added in a CE for a perk), content passes which remove parts if you don’t conform to their will. Cross promotions like Sony and Subway… seriously it’s getting out of hand. Just look at inFAMOUS 2.
I2:
Classic Cole/Grenade skill (forget the name… I think tracker?)/3 mission pack/dynamic theme = Subway prizes.
Wave skill (again forget) = Shick promo.
Kessler/Reaper/weapon skins/soundtrack/Lightning hook/Electrocution Grenade = Super Voucher or Preorder item (some)
Now all of this was out on day one and the only way to get it all was to do every promo + buy the CE or buy in the store.
