Jeff Kalles of Penny Arcade was once an employee for Nintendo of America. He’s a fairly good source, so it should be taken as a pleasant to fairly believable rumor that DICE had originally pitched the Battlefield series as a Gamecube exclusive.
Due to Jeff Kalles, they loved the initial ideas, but due to a lack of an online strategy, the plan was scrapped.
And then Battlefield came to fruition.
Still not quite as big as Modern Warfare 3, but dang, how paths diverge. It could be comparable to the low road that Silicon Knights took when parted from Nintendo. But exactly the opposite.
