Beyond Good and Evil is a typical case of great game, underwhelming sales, firmly earning it the title of ‘cult classic’. For ages fans clamoured for a sequel and in 2008 their prayers were answered when lead writer Michel Ancel announced that a sequel was indeed in development.
Sine then not a whole lot has been heard about the much-anticipated sequel, although Ancel in a recent interview with gamesradar has spoken out about some of his intentions for the game – and some of the difficulties associated with that.
“We’ve already worked on the sequel, and the idea is to be deeper in this direction, and to have this… involved storytelling. That’s the main thing that we have to focus on,” said Ancel, speaking about the narrative direction of Beyond Good and Evil 2
“We’ve had some technical issues. It’s a complex game.”
“And my thing is that we really want to make the game that was previously imagined, with all this feeling of traveling. Mass Effect did a good job on that side, and I think that there are a lot of things to do to continue in that direction, with storytelling and a massive world.”
When asked if this was the reason why Beyond Good and Evil 2 would not appear on current gen consoles, Ancel was pretty straightforward in his response: “Yeah, yeah. That’s the reason.” he admitted.
Involved storytelling is something the medium has been grappling with for some time now, and to come out and say that more power than the current consoles can deliver is required to deliver such a story is intriguing to say the least.
