A spokesperson from Sony recently confirmed with IGN that they have begun shipping newer PlayStation 3 models to North America that include a 40nm RSX graphics chip, as opposed to the 90nm and 65nm chip sizes that the previous versions carried.
This smaller chip allows the console to consume less power, run a good deal cooler, and supposedly help Sony reduce the manufacturing price on the console so that they can break even and profit from their console. If you want to pick out the newer unit from the crowd, loook for one with a model number of “CECH-2101A.”
