Accessing the Secret Ending for Red Dead Redemption

Without spoiling anything from Red Dead Redemption, finishing the mission, “The Enemy that Shall Be Destroyed”, is NOT the true ending of the game. There’s actually a hidden ending that you can unlock.

For gamers who were disappointed to how the game ended you have a chance to truly finish the story by unlocking a hidden mission. When all of the story-missions are complete, the secret mission that shows the real ending of the game will be disguised in the Map as a Stranger mission. The mission, “Remember My Family” can be triggered by following the “?” icon to the Blackwater Station Train Platform. Approach the Federal Agent and there you will get to see how this game will truly end.

Upon finishing the mission, you will see the credits. Congratulations!

  1. Lolz. This is not secret ending :D This is only one true ending with finishing credits
    rofl

  2. This is the only ending. And i didn’t like it , it was too obvious and easy ….

  3. You just saved this game for me. Loved the game, just a bit disappointed with how it turned out.

  4. soooo pissed how the oneneding happened i loved john. if i was himi wouldv shot thro the barn and ran i mean i had a fucking shot gun and rifle and dynomite he couldve lived and jacks voice is so squeaky
    WHAT THE FUCK rockstar

  5. so what is the alt ending do i get another character change. anyone would be better then jack

  6. the game was great, but the end….! Trying to stay alive al missions and then killed by 10 people wich you could kill easily if the end wasn’t scripted. And Jack…. Well i hope you dont have to pay as him in the next red dead. but seriously he’s the most annoying character ever in a game

  7. you guys are dumb, jack is amazing, he is growing up just to be like john, and i hope we do play him in the next game, thatd be sick. great game, great ending

  8. To everyone thinking, “Oh, I could’ve easily taken out those 10-15 guys.” If John had killed those soldiers, they would just keep coming after him and his family. He decided to sacrifice himself to protect his family and give them a life of normalcy.

I thought it was a perfect ending.

  9. The ending was great yes i had dynamite to i could have easly killed those handful of guys but that not the point. The point is they wanted him dead and wouldnt stop until he was dead it sort of symbolized the death of the cowboy since about that time thing were becoming more modern. John sacrificed himself so him family could live if he didnt then they would be force to be on the run till caught again or even killed. Hell his friend uncle was alreay killed and he didnt do anything. The ending was great and for every one who says they didnt like the ending then explain what you wanted to happen, cause if you cant then you have no room to complain. And lastly jack marston may not be as cool as john but he young he wasnt grown up yet i dont understand how people say he the worst character when he is you the hole point is now you build jacks personality is he angry at the world or forgiving an evil asshole or a kind gentle men. Depending on what you do may even effect the next game since alot of games are doing that now adays.

  10. i just wanted jhon to have a happy life with his family, why they kill him he just wanted to grow old with his familiy. i mean if you got a man to kill 3uber dangerus outlaws well first one not so dangerus and 5000odd guys on the way and he does it wouldnt u cut him a break.

  11. Well, actually. It isnt a bad ending really. Its a different one. Its a unique ending. Other GTA games havent ended like this, but the one thing about it is some of the missions were, well dull. Especially to the end. Last mission was good, and the ending was kind of shocking tbh. Different, to say the least.

  12. ok was wondering because there could be alternet endings.. if you shoot that 1 guy when john dies in that slowmo thing does he comeback. and then if you would have shot the gun off the person you kill in remeber my family what happens?

  13. what a horrible ending. i understand the argument that the army or ross were never going to leave john and his family alone so he sacrificed himself. BUT, we’re playing a game here, a game where the creators have full creative-license and could have done 50 different things to keep john alive and have a happy ending. when i peaked out the door and seen the military in the last mission i instantly thought okay, im gonna run for this ladder in the barn, go up top to the deck and smoke these fools in ‘red eye’ with the henry repeater, or chuck some dynamite out there and piss on the ashes. instead i get stuck in a suicide scene. mad bogus. a better ending would have been to kill the military, then chase ross to blackwater and smoke him in front of his secretary and become the new mayor or sheriff or something. ross was the one with the beef, so you kill him, you have a worry-free john marston and a happy ending. then maybe in the next game you could have jack taking over for his aging father or something. its stupid that people try to say that was the only possible ending though…..we’re playing a GAME, where theres an infinity of possible endings, and when you play a game for 40 hours, you sort of expect not to be kicked in the balls when you get to the finish line. if ROCKSTAR doesnt bring john marston and his beloved abigail back to life in the sequel, (once again its a game, it might be far-fetched but they can certainly do it) i will be pissed. jack is OK, but hes no John. maybe after some careful planning on ROCKSTARS part i could have been coaxed and convinced into taking jack up as the main character. but there was no grooming period for the new main character, he was a snobby little book worm who i found myself wanting to shoot instead of parent. but i guess ROCKSTAR thinks after hunting with this awkward little fellow a few times, and on the grounds of him being the beloved main characters son, they can just kill off the dude who you’d been playing as for 2 days straight and you would accept the replacement just fine. i say its stupid, i hope ROCKSTAR can get a little more creative next time and reward people after they spend hours on end playing their game instead of judo-chopping them in the taint. fu rockstar.

  14. i think that the end should end like this: jack and the uncle dies and abigale n john flees to another country where the sequel begins! :D

  15. when john said we all pay for what we do in the end it was his time to pay up he couldnt of went out in a better way he died like a man not by shooting through the barn or throwing dynAmite out of it and the fact that his son is just like him is the happy ending what did you expects a disney ending psha

  16. when john said we all pay for what we do in the end it was his time to pay up he couldnt of went out in a better way he died like a man not by shooting through the barn or throwing dynAmite out of it and the fact that his son is just like him is the happy ending what did you expects a disney ending Psha i take that back lion king was bad ass

  17. @Derek To everyone thinking, “Oh, I could’ve easily taken out those 10-15 guys.” If John had killed those soldiers, they would just keep coming after him and his family. He decided to sacrifice himself to protect his family and give them a life of normalcy.

I thought it was a perfect ending.

when you think about , i know people say that they could killed them with dynamite and their henry repeater , but my idea of the ending was (now my ending , if i was him ) i wouldnt of done the suicidal ending i would of burst out of the barn and confronted Ross , like the start with Williamson , and convinced him to let me live in peace , if that didnt work then i would of went like a man just walked up to him and let him take me to jail , because of the way his wife and son were when he died , you couldnt put somebody through that and also Jack might of grown up to be a mayor or work for a decent living , not become a cold-blooded killer .

  18. @Derek
I agree about the fact that he couldnt of taken them ( at least without cover ) but if I were him , And IF “I” WERE HIM . I would of burst open the door and confronted Ross ( like with Williamson at the start ) and try and make him see that all i wanted to do is live in harmony with my family , and if that didnt work then i would of given myself up like a man , because i couldnt let Jack become a revengeful Cold-Blooded killer and have Abi in such distress after my death . ut that is just me .

  19. It was an appropriate and powerful ending. Unfortunately for John his decisions to sacrifice himself turned out for the worst, since the better life he wanted for his son never happened. His son became a vengeful individual, and became like his father which was the last thing John wanted.

  20. I think the ending was well thought out and fitted the game perfectly. I believe the era john Marston was living in was coming to an end, “flying machines that turn men into angels”, automobiles and the technology of weaponry. I think the US army was a symbol of this, the death of John, there being no-one else like him, was a metaphor for times changing.

He knew everyone has to pay for what they’ve done and he accepted this, only fearful of his family’s wellbeing as it has been throughout the game. He always wanted a better life for his son. I felt almost like a responsibility to carry out John’s wishes with Jack, at the same time I wanted to kill every single person I could in the game. It’s like the player can realise the turmoil of the character and the death of his father, who until recently just started to be a proper dad to his son.

In the game, on the ranch Jack even mentions reading about a story of a boy who loses his cowboy dad and goes to avenge him. The moment I heard that I thought interesting… it was like a subtle hint dedicated to the ending. I felt a great connection with the characters and they had some excellent writers, they wanted the player to feel it was more than a game, I can’t remember the last game that made me think so much about the characters, storyline and the conclusion. It was beautifully done and quite a moving story.

  21. horrible ending.
come on, it’s a game. if ROCKSTAR really wants to make millions, now they should make another (happy) ending to RDR so that people can download it for money. if they’ll do that, it will defently sell great.

  22. so if i do the alternative ending,i dont have to play this ugly thing called jack marston?(the ending is great, but jack is just ugly)

  23. The clue to the ending was in the title. ‘Redemption’. In the manner of his death he redeemed his character from the many stains from his days as a killer. It was a bit like the ending of Gran Tourino with Clint. Clint of course has a couple of links to Westerns.

  24. the ending really soured the game for me. i mean i thought the game should have ended after you win your family back. all that stuff after it just went on too long and it got pointless. i would have been fine with a number of outcomes but the actual ending sucked horribly. i don’t want to even finish any of the challenges or the couple things i had left to do now. it’s just weird. and i certainly haven’t ended up feeling that way about pretty much any video game ever so that’s just a testament to how badly they butchered it. also, they won’t get more $ out of me now that they could have with an expansion a la gta.

  25. to all the people saying “oh it should have had a happy ending, they could have taken creative license to make it better” that would have completely ruined the entire story. The second John marston stepped onto that iron horse at the beginning, with his wild west clothing among suited men and talk of motorcars, I knew he had to die for this story to be complete. look back to GTA 4, that hardly had a happy ending, and it was better for it. any old game can have you finishing off with your family and friends safe and sound, but it takes a great developer to make a game who’s ending leaves a lump in your throat as much as this did. Dutch himself was aware that they were a dying breed. and to that guy who said “I would have let them arrest me” do you really think they ever planned to arrest john? he was a remnant of a bygone age, and much like the father in The Road, he must die for life to move on.

Fan-bloody-tastic ending Rockstar, couldn’t have been a better western ending if it tried

  26. i wish John would have grown old, and Jack turns into an outlaw because of his horrible childhood, and John tries to stop him from going down that road, but fails.

  27. I really enjoyed the ending especially because it was different. I do, however, agree that playing as Jack was kind of lame as he is not as awesome as John. I wish they would have made us appreciate Jack a little more with some extra missions to show his growth and put his voice through puberty. Also, the revenge mission was too easy. I wish Jack was forced with taking out many of the officers, looting their safes, eliminating the second in command guy to finally get to the top dog. This would have been the perfect ending.

  28. Just completed the last ending, what an ending I even missed the world cup game for it!! I agree as some cooments above, I don’t like Jack and would of liked John to survive but the ending was just AMAZING, unpredicted and so different from the fairy tale endings of most games and for that reason alone I hope Rockstar never bring out an alternative ending!! I’m surwe I will get used to Jack. Great game guys!!

  29. Oh man, it shouldn’t end like this. I had a 22-bullet gun, while Marston picks up the f—ing six-shooter.

  30. Above someone commented that john should chase down Ross to black water and killed him and become mayor or sheriff. And his family would be safe. Well i do thank you for providing a ending instead of just stating the ending suck but i dont think if you kill a man who works for the goverment and a bunch of U.S soldies they simply make you mayor and leave you alone. And to every one who says there should be an alternate nice/happy ending, i have this to say things dont always turn out happy i know the creature could have just pulled shit out there ass to make a happy ending, but just cause its a video game and you can do what ever you want dousnt mean its a good idea to if john sprouted wings flew to his family carried them to heaven and then become god and struck ross with lighting it would be a happier ending but i wouldnt make a lick of scene an in order to have a good ending to a realistic story it have to be realistic.

  31. Since I loved this game, no doubt I thought that with as much as it had, I also thought it was missing a bit. There were one mabie two indians. Also, with the horses, you could see a difference between the weak horses compared to the stronger ones. I wished that there were some way of being able of finding out which horses you have or had, besides the cheap reinsertable horse deeds in your menu. Having the ability to attain all those animal (parts) was great, but there wasn’t much use of them. It would be like mario finding a coin in a block and trading it in at a store for a mushroom. Yes there was a few places in the game that you did use a few of these items, birds feathers and beaver pelts, but I just thought as great as the graphics were, there could have been more.

Now If I were to think of an alternate ending/ beginning to a new game….. ha ha! Well as far as every one has played, we all know because we did, Our friends rockstar are always on top of things! Think this, rdr2 or three or whatever it would be. John ain’t dead, Jacks grown up, (different jack because quite frankly every one else is right this jack character sounded like an idiot mad man compared to his rough spoken father, John is the man.) Any ways, they meet in the future. a lovely family reunion where father son and perhaps mother have to take on pioneer life as the wild west has evolved and never really died. That hot wife of his had a wild streak in her, as did bonnie.

  32. Damn this ending made me very sad. It is sad sad ending, but also a very powerful one. I think it is the better way to end the game other than john lives with his family end take the herd up and down all day. The sad games (and movies and books) turn out to be the best ones.

  33. thank you for making this i really didnt like the ending of the game and was actually
upset i finished the game last night and cant wait to see the real ending

  34. thank you for making this i really didnt like the ending of the game and was actually
upset i finished the game last night and cant wait to see the real ending

  35. Jack, Uncle and Abigail die. John is overwrought and drinks until he passes out, gets found by Bonnie then they leave the US and live in Mexico. John recovers and goes for red dead revenge. Hunts down Ross and his posse, kills everyone who saw John escape, leaving no evidence of John’s existance. Game ends with John tending to the ranch, fucking Bonnie and all in all having a whale of a time in Mexico.

  36. You guys are stupid Red dead redemption is the prequil of Red Dead Revolver a game that came out for the PS2 and original xbox so that’s the damn sequil!!!!! You play as Jack killing the gov’t and things like that!!!!!!

  37. Alright.. I spent around 21 hours total on the game.. And beat it.. I was honestly pissed when John was killed.. Playing for almost a full day, time wise, and then having the guy you built the rep for whacked just like that? Now I’m not saying that he should’ve just walked out scotch free.. But not death.. The whole, “You build your fame and honor, and different reactions will happen” doesn’t even come into play for these situations.. There was very few missions where you got to make a choice.. The game had a lot of flaws, but I kept playing.. Mainly because of the fact that I WANTED to just finish the game.. I did love it, because it’s a free roaming western (who the hell wouldn’t love that?) and LOOKED like it was going to have an RPG element to it.. Granted, you could “level” your weapons and horses up, but I used almost the same weapons through the whole game, and got the best horse out of the possible 3 within an hour of playing it..

Now for the ending, there should have been a way for a “choice”, per say, on the outcome.. If you’re a famed and honorable man.. You live out your life after dealing with Ross some way or another.. Neutral, you have a hell of a gun battle and you could die, or live, lose your family, basically that would be the “up in the air” part.. Dishonorable, you get your shit cleaned.. And the fame would come into play with how many people would come to your aide.. Like, Bonnie and the gang help you out, the Army help you out and turn on Ross, or even them silly “Meh-hee-cans” come to raise some hell.. Just irritating is all it was..

Then when the “real” ending came and Jack whacks Ross (That’s what she said moment of the day) it redeemed itself.. Putting the true Redemption into it.. However, when Jack finds Ross and just cleans house.. It was anti climactic.. Satisfying, but WAY to easy.. You spend all this time killing other men, and find the “final” boss and you kill him with only 3 placed shots in the stand off? Kinda bland..

But as for a sequel.. Go back a few years.. Play Red Dead Revolver, and there ya go.. Now we need a prequel for Red Dead Redemption, maybe play as Dutch? A younger Dutch, since we know what happens in the end..

Overall, great game, had a lot of glitchy problems while I was playing (people sitting wrong at the tables, on chairs, falling through the ground forever, dead while standing up, horse randomly taking a turn for the cliffs [damnit] and a few others).. To much time spent in Mexico, mainly because there is so much Spanish being spoken that I didn’t understand what they were saying the whole time (I may have missed something to where you could understand it? Besides learning the language.. ha) and it seeming like Rockstar just wanted the ending to be done with, in a way that you go, find Ross, and bam.. You kill him.. I’d give it a solid 8/10 or 8.7/10 overall.. It’s a great play, not a buy, and a good change of pace from other games..

  38. Danny, how in hell can Red Dead Redemption be the prequel of Red Dead Revolver? Red Dead Revolver is set in the 1880s, whilst Red Dead Redemption is set in 1911? And you don’t play as Jack in Revolver, you play as Red Harlow.

  39. What i wished is john lived but since he didn’t i wished that Jack kept the farm alive because in the mission where they buy the cattle John told him when he dies maybe he could make a better farm. And he didn’t have enough mission with his family hes there for like 2 days then he dies. It’s like give his some time with his family… god!

  40. ur a dick danny jack marston wasnt in red dead revolver they r part of the same series but not the same characters there for storylines dont match up. get ur facts straight dicklips

  41. @ Danny
WRONG! READ DEAD REDEMPTION IS NOT A PREQUEL TO REVOLVER AT ALL, they are completely different characters with completely different stories, in revolver you play as red h… (forgot name) NOT RELATED TO THE MARSTONS AT ALL. and revolver is set BEFORE redemption, SO HOW THE FUCK CAN IT BE A PREQUEL, so in fact YOU ARE STUPID!

  42. For those of you who have done the alternative ending on red dead redemption do you have to got back to ‘Spare The Love, Spoil The Child’ mission to be able to go to blackwater as john marston or are you jack in play back missions. Whenever someone knows could you email me comment me back on this please.

  43. I actually would like to say that this has been THE FIRST video game with a sad ending. :( i turned on all cheats and killed everyone in blackwater with jack lookin for deputy lol

  44. everyone who thinks this was some kind of appropriate ending is just dumb. maybe youre so used to life kicking you in the balls that you’ve brainwashed yourself into believing that fucked up endings are the way things should be. im not an infant who needs a happy ending, but i’d atleast like a good one. a good way to end it, like someone said above, would’ve been to have ross kill johns family. then we could have had red dead revenge in the next RDR game. if this was the final installment of the RDR series, i could see killing john off in some dramatic way. the series just started in my eyes, seeing as how red dead revolver had nothing to do with this storyline. so if this was the last game in the series and there wouldnt be any more sequels to it, then of course, you kill off the main character. with how well this game did and with how many people liked it, im sure rockstar will be making another one. and what do we have to look forward to now? jack fuckin martson, cuz some overly anxious douchecontainer decided to kill off one of the greatest video game characters of alltime prematurely. again, i just cant stress this enough….anyone who says the ending was fitting or it was the only viable option is soooo fucking retarded i cant even begin to find the words for it. john could have A. killed ross and been done with the entire problem, B. moved his family to mexico and lived happily ever after, or C. let ross kill johns family and you have a ridiculously good plot set up for the sequel.

maybe rockstar wasnt sure if the game would be received well and werent banking on a definite sequel for this game, so they pulled the trigger on the dramatic ending too soon, but it shows a real lack of vision in my opinion. in any other game where theres a shitty ending i say “thats gay” and move on. but this game was so awesome, the main character was such a pleasure to play as, and the future was so wide open with this title, that i just cant fathom how these people could make such a mis step like this. i beat the game over a month ago and im still every bit as pissed as i was when it first happened.

not to mention theres enough fucked up endings in real life, whats wrong with expecting a good old fashioned happy ending when it comes to entertainment? or atleast waiting for the series to be done before you take out an awesome main character? PLUS, if they had took more time to set up jack as a replacement, it might have been ok. but they didnt take any time at all. they didnt even make him a likeable character. so wtf does the sequel have in store? they need to find someway to redo the ending or make a sequel where john comes back to life. i feel like kathy bates in “misery”. i want to hobble the dirty bird who wrote that ending with a peice of firewood and a sledgehammer until they agree to re-write it.

  45. I TOTALLY FOUND THIS ENDING ON ACCIDENT I WAS JUST RIDING AROUND AND I SAW THE “?” AND THAT WAS HOW I FOUND OUT

  46. In my personal opiniion, Red Dead Redemption was one of the best games i’ve ever played. It had an epic plot. It had charming, sophisticated characters. It’s graphics were mind-blowing. But of course, with every game in existence, there is always one fault that can make of break the game.

In the case of Red Dead Redemption, the fault is probably the most important thing in any game. THE ENDING. I played the game for hours on end, both addicted and gripped to it. But of course, when i reached the end, i thought that maybe the game would make you think John Marston was going to die, but at the last moment (just as he is about to step out of the barn) something would happen that would turn the tables around, somehow allowing John to live. And if such an ending were to exist, it would have made that game just about flawless in every way possible.

But of course, the obvious happened and John Marston simply walked out, attempted to shoot one or two guys, but was killed. Jack and his mother bury him, as sad music plays. Suddenly we see another grave next to John’s. The grave is that of his wife (whose name i forget) who died a few years after him. And then we see Jack dressed like his father did and baically just walks away. The End.

Maybe it’s just me, but that ending couldn’t have been more rushed. I personally expect a story so dense and intricate to end with a bang. Something to be remembered. But this was the exact opposite. I mean, sure we got an after-mission to officially mark the end, but to be honest, that changes nothing.

You see, after John meets his end and his son basically becomes him reborn, what really changes? NOTHING. After the disappointment of the ending had setttled in and i discovered I was forced to play as Jack, i almost instictively went to Blackwater, to see if any changes had been made (after alll, it had been about five years since I’d last been there in the place of John Marston) but i sadly found that it’s just as I’d left it. Everywhere and everything is seemingly untouched. I even went back to the main house the family used to live in. The only change was that it was horribly abandoned. It was somehow creepy… Anyway, the house’s condition is EXACTLY the same as it was five years before. At first i assumed that Jack had looked after the house over the past few years, but i even found his mother’s pot STILL cooking on the stove (the one that she is seen cooking at, before John steals a bit of it’s contents)!!

So, overall, I’d rate the game itself an absolute 10/10, but if i had to rate the ending, I’d give it a 2/10. Sure, it had an averagely entertaining revenge mission (‘Remember My Family’) but it makes no logical sense whatsoever and is ridddled with countless flaws and contradictions.

Thanks for those of you who read my probably brutal comment (sorry! I was just telling the truth!) and I hope that some of you agree with me on the ending of Red Dead Redemption. Thanks! :)

  47. it was a sad ending but it feels like it ended too soon.. there was more that could be done..if there is a sequel then john should have been kept alive otherwise its kinda pointless.. they could of made the ending something like he rescues hes family has some time with them and maybe he finds out ross is coming for him (ends there) and then the sequel would be something to do with fighting the army and making your way to ross with some missions in between, including seeing bonnie again meeting up with the other semi main characters tying off the loose ends..but other that that it was well worth the buy wish there was more to do..

  48. The ending was great. This is more than a game, this well written story, a masterpiece. Romeo and Julliet also had the protagonist died, it is still remembered as one greatest story. First Mafia game also dead, and it rocks. I don’t say that the story has to be tragedy to be great, but it fits perfectly with all piece of the story here, it will be to cheesy and unrealistic if John not dead. This game depict the realism of what was back then in US, while so many ‘legendary’ cowboys die by guns, not old ages. Billy the kid, wild bill hitchcock, you name it.

  49. No comments about Bonnie?…Come on you guys!!!!….christ, the last time we saw her she was really crushed looking at the floor, entering some bar or whatever and deeply dissapointed that john was sooooo into his wife. I kinda agree with the ending in some way but something was quite uncompleted so i started to play as Jack and the first thing i did was to travel to bonnie’s ranch to make a connection (since the age difference was just 5-6 years…i think) so everything could be fixed but the ranch was empty. At first i thought john’s wife was going to get killed (along with jack) by the blackwater politicians just to piss him off and leave a HUGE burden into his heart like forever…they’ll not kill him, just to fuck him up a la hitchcock’s “vertigo”.

Then john feeling misserable and down gets drunk and lives by his own…alone and all traumatized….then Bonnie shows up being sarcastic and shit like she ussualy goes just to cheer him up since she heard the bad news….then she tells him that she got rid of her father’s ranch cause he suffered a massive heart attack and got oprah rich with an oil land up in Plainview (nice nod to P.T Anderson’s “there will be blood”, love that shit)…they bang, he builds up a new family and leaves us to a proper sequel, end of it, finito. rockstar san diego or whatever…sign me up bitches!

  50. They should have allowed you to choose your ending. First the way it happened where john dies and his family lives. an alternate ending where you go out the back and run but the military kills your son and wife before you can do anything. at least you’d have a choice on what happened. then jack would have followed in his fathers footsteps out of honor.

  51. i loved john and before ending the game i was thinking about red dead 2 with more missions but with john NOT jack , i felt sad & angry for this ending
    :((((

i didnt like jack that much…

  52. For the stranger task remeber my family they should of shown im more detail why they killed john or there should of been two choices like on the first gta

  53. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS I LOVE THIS GAME THE 3 DAYS WAS WORTH IT. AND I WISH THE ENDING DID LEAVE JOHN ALIVE BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO.

  54. THE GAME IS VERY GOOD, GREAT GAMEPLAY AND EVERYTHING, ALTHOUGH ITS VERY SHORT!! I NEVER EXPECTED IT TO END THERE, I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE MUCH MORE MISSIONS..

  55. Best ending in the video game world ever.STRONG,POWERFUL!! Sad beautiful sad happy tears. SOILDER sad..only kids would think otherwise..SACRIFICE..Rockstar ROCKS.

  56. after john died i remembered i saved before the last mission so i turned it off to play as john and finish the other things first. but it was done.
im replaying the game but will not do the final mission till its the last thing from 100% completion

  57. there are something that i dont get:
1.why bonnie was upset in her last sence?
2.why john was so rude to the old man”uncle”i mean
3.ending was good but rockstar shouldnt add last mission i mean the last one in blackwater.why?because they then they were able to make RDR 2 and player as jack with a fool story just to take revenge of his father

  58. So all the poeple who dont understand what the game is trying to potray is that a great man would sacrafice there life to save there family and to all the people who said they could destroy the 15 guys that is illogicle because shure john killed almost the entire mexican army it was know without the help of the other comanions in that game you dont face 15 enemys with shot gus and pistols all aimed at you in close range there i know way anbody could take all of them then the more that would keep coming even if john got away where ever he went he would be in that situation of constant betrail and dont forget john has a huge bounty on his head the would not have lasted a week before more oeple came and killed him so for all the people who where so ignorant and cant see why any great man would do this for his family than you did not see the deeper concep of the story during the whole game there was this felling that this cannot turn out well in the end even after he is safe with his family for a few days it just seemed like he didnt belong there and I think that even john could see that he didnt belong in a normal society there for could never live happily with this family after the events that have happend to him and i do agree that jack is allitle less than i expected i think he turned out worsse than his father and is more violent if not shown on the out side but on the end

  59. Don’t forget that video games are not just games but art. This was the perfect ending to an old western film so why not an old western video game?

  60. yo to all the people who thought the ending was wack, walk out your front door find the nearest hill and commit suicide like KRATOS in God of War tried to do, cuz this ending is one of the nastiest endings and its a fucking game what do you care about the guy u use, are you gay or sum sht, damn turds. the ending make you wonder wtf just happened, rockstar did it so u feel like that dumb sons of bitches just stfu its a game, “jack is no john” man shut the fuck up

  61. i loved this game, my only downside is that after i killed ross and the credis rolled i was still playing as jack and the game hadn’t ended.
i believe that if the game was designed to allow john to live and to make sure that jack didn’t follow in his footsteps and made a proper living for himself, then that would have been redemption, cause he made a complete 180 of his life and may sure his boy didn’t become a killer.
for anyone how is interested Rockstar should make two more games for the series RD Revival, a prequel that you play as john and do as much damaged as possible and a sequel were you star as jack.

  62. Why did he open the doors and walk out. I would have gotten into cover, and when they barged in… dynamite, baby. The ending really made me sad, i know its just a game, but still.

  63. There 2 things you can do to stay alive
    1
    Use the invincibilty cheat
    2
And use the dead eye to take out the 3 secret agents
And the 2 people on horse so they don’t chase the wife

  64. I think that shouldn’t have been the ending, it should have been the beginning to another red dead game. Also, i agree with everyone who says jack’s voice sucks. It sounds like he’s ten.

  65. Finished the game last night and it has occupied my mind all morning.

My thoughts, and its important to say that I fully go with the ending, is that I still had things left that I/John Marsden wanted to do. I don’t just mean missions to finish but little things like buying a fast horse, fixing the ranch, going out mountain climbing in that cool new part of the map, drinking in Thieves Landing etc.

All of these things were stashed in a mental tick list and filed with a happy outcome that one day I will retire after completing the game. Robbed of this is a hard pill to swallow as it is an allegory for our own lives.

And realism was a massive part of the delivery of the game; no happy ending in life.

Few games have conjured up anything close to this level of emotional intelligence!!

    Thank you Rockstar!

  66. WTF!!! Best game I have ever played and it ends like this??? There was so much more that could have been done with this game. So many possible directions that could have been taken. I understand the storyline and why it came to that but damn…

  67. well lets hope jack marstens kids don’t look like american cowboy asians!I mean playing as a latino wouldve been a exciting ending or even the sherrif from the mcfarlens farm couldve rode on in shot everyone and in the process your dog got shot your son fell off a horse got parralized and john marsten and his wife ditch the kid ,get a latino kid as there new son and lived alone and away from all those retarded cowboys who can’t swim!

  68. Throughout the whole game i was anticipating a spectular batyle at the end where irish, seth, landon, nigel west etc. Would all come together to. Assist john in one final battle, really disapointed the story doesnt continue after jack and ross but i was still amazed by the game abd was sad to see it end

  69. Everything just seemed too perfect when the missions with Jack and Abagail started. I just kept waiting for the scene where John comes home to see his wife and kid hanging from nooses and totally loses his mind.

  70. i think john went out in style just like leonadas in 300.i’m not happy with his death but he did die honorablly.please make a sequal but not with jack motherf***ing marston maybe in the present (gta/rdr crossover).

  71. Yeah I was pissed off with the ending. I found Jack to be a bit annoying, I was kind of hoping that the bear would eat him. John was awesome one of my favourite game characters and for us to complete all these missions and for him to be killed abruptly at the end is just not right. Then to have to get Jack to kill Ross and the game to finish just after that was stupid and pointless. Wonderful game but the ending kind of ruined it for me, i’ll find it hard to play it all over again or even getting more than my 79%.

  72. This is to everyone bitching about the ending, especially the douchebag with the name xray. Yeah, I hated it at first too, but then I used something I was given called a brain, and all in all it WAS his only option. You say we’re retarded for saying that, well I say YOU are retarded for trying to paint your little picture perfect scenario endings that would’ve completely ruined the game and not made ANY sense at all.

So you say John just should have killed them and been done with it? Yeah, because obviously in a world where the government/army is willing to shoot first and ask questions later, they would’ve just STOPPED trying to track him down if he killed a bunch of them. That makes complete sense. Retard.

Then you say he should’ve just hid somewhere with his family, maybe in Mexico? Okay, because with a name as famous as John Marston where he is known from Mexico all the way to the Great Plains and is noticed and recognized everywhere he goes, you REALLY think even for a second they wouldn’t be able to eventually track him down no matter where he went? And then you list MEXICO of all places to run to? Dumb ass. If you were able to track down all three of your gang members eventually, I’m sure the damn government officials could track you down eventually too. Just a thought.

Your third option being just to kill off his whole innocent family who hasn’t done a damn thing, and has already been affected enough by the whole situation….yeah because that wouldn’t be a depressing ending, right? Leaving John to deal with the guilt and misery of knowing his whole family got offed because of him and growing old and alone without his wife and kid is a MUCH better option.

You sir, are retarded, and it’s almost as bad as the guy who said he wished that John had killed them all and then become mayor or sheriff. Your idiotic ideas of endings you came up with in a few minutes of bitterness because someone died in your video game are supposed to compare to that of the writers of this game, who inevitably spent weeks or months working on this ending? Right. That makes perfect sense. If you want a fairytale ending, go watch an effing Disney movie, you pukes.

  73. great game , bit glitchy .ending? bit sad alright but its were the game was going ´ old west is dying´ etc etc top game though

  74. I thought the ending was great.. But I do think the story should have warmed up to Abigail and Jack much better than it did. The way his family was inserted into the story, it was hard to care enough about em. The story should have had John seeing his family from behind lines a few times, with some sort of dialogue..

  75. I think that 2-3 missions before the final one were showing us Jack, this “geek”,and i think it ment that John saw it too(in mission where jack went hunting alone),he was sure that if he’ll die his son wouldnt become a person like him and wouldnt try to revenge, but Jack did.
I was schocked at the end of the game…waiting for the second part!

  76. like a majority of you i grew attached to john and abbie even uncle, this just means the writters did a LEGENDARY job. im 13 i plan to become an author and im jealous of the writters and inspired although they could have made jack a little more awesome and more missons in rember my family and what happened to most people all i kno jeb got married to his horse irish was found dead ]: seth got rich bonnie went heartbroken landon ricketts died marshall retired . does any1 kno any1 ive missed and who the man from i know you is? back to john edgar ross killed him because it would make him look better. john died knowing if he lived it would be only short-lived and his family would be killed by bounty hunters on the way atleast abbie survived edgar ross altho dying later

  77. Why did Kojima replace Snake with Raiden? To make you appreciate Snake more, especially while you run along trying to keep up with him at the very end; meanwhile wishing you could be cool as Snake. Why was Raiden made to be so badass in MGS4? To make Snake look even more old and decrepit, meanwhile wishing you could do the cool stuff Raiden was pulling off. Now Raiden has his own game where you can.

Same idea applies: you just spent 20-30 hours becoming emotionally invested in a character only to see him get killed off and replaced with another. Just like with Raiden, the general public is outraged… Mission completed. Rockstar just martyred John and you appreciate him and maybe even took him for granted before he was shot up and replaced. These people saying the ending sucked only validates the good job they did of developing him. People are sad that he’s dead. Isn’t that the point of death? To be upset? If John Marston were such a shitty character, would anyone care that he died? Aerith died, same reaction. Or, even more similar, Tony Montana died too. But now the idea of keeping those two alive seems utterly ridiculous.

  78. First time a game ending had such a visceral impact on me. Did I like it? NO. But simply because it DID have such an impact I have to give the game a lot of credit. The way I REALLY wanted it to go: John completes all missions for government, then finds his wife actually died. Then lots more missions going after the government scum. Then getting reunited with his son and finally hooking up and settling down with Bonnie Mcfarland! It was obvious she fell in love with him! I can think of a million sequels. I just hope Rockstar does another western game! I did not want it to end! How about one centered around the gold rush! MORE, MORE! A little more attention to the bugs next time though. Not a ton of them in RDR but enough to really improve on. Overall, thumbs up.

  79. Well I got sad at the end. I usually always do when I beat games, like halo, or destroy all humans. Cause there might not be another game after it. But I’m sure there will be one cause they make a shitload of money off just the game not even the DLC but for a sequel make a game about when john Dutch Abigail and the other guys rode in a gang. That should would be great. And jacks not the coolest guy cause he is depressed. He lost his family. He loves his father but yet hates him for making him a gunslinger. Abigail was a prostitute…. Yeah….. Johns mom was a ho too. She’s hot though and also in another red dead I’d like to see the scarlet lady or what ever her name is and more of that strange guy who’s a accountant . There ya go

  80. Here’s how I would have liked the ending to have been:

Uncle and Abigail get killed in the shootout at Beecher’s Hope. John and Jack escape to Mexico and join up with Landon Ricketts. In the meanwhile, Edgar Ross finds himself a subject to investigation for corruption, and now he embarks on the personal vendetta against John, Jack and Landon to the point that he’ll stop at nothing to kill the Marstons and Ricketts in hope that it would redeem him in the eyes of the government. Ross and his agents raid MacFarlane’s Ranch under accusation that they’re harboring or aiding/abetting John Marston. In the shootout, Drew MacFarlane sends Amos to find John Marston and warn him that Ross is onto him before he gets killed. Bonnie is now captured by Ross and held hostage at the Ranch. In the meanwhile, Amos reaches Chuparosa and tells John, Jack and Landon what happened.

A huge battle takes place at MacFarlane’s Ranch. John, Jack, Landon and Amos fight their way to rescue Bonnie only to find that Ross had taken her to Beecher’s Hope to lure John out. Landon gets killed in the shootout. At MacFarlane’s Ranch just immediately following the battle, they’re joined by Marshall Leigh Johnson and his posse who were sent by the government to take out Ross and his band of rogue lawmen and restore the law.

They ride out Beecher’s Hope and the final showdown takes place over there. The posse takes down Ross’ gang with John finding Ross holed up inside the house holding Bonnie hostage. John tells him to let her go and challenges him to a duel. Ross gets taken out in the duel. In the meanwhile, the Cavalry is coming up over the hill and while John, and Jack prepare for yet another showdown with the military, Leigh Johnson tells him they are late, but were coming to help him take down Ross, and that he indeed gets his life back.

In the final scene, John, Bonnie and Jack ride off into the sunset.

That would have been my preferred ending.

  81. WTF – that was a horrible ending, it is red dead redemption – a chance to put mistakes behind you and atone for sins ………. become something more than you have been becasue you paid for your mistakes. Is that lesson that youth should take, if you make a mistake you ALWAYS have to pay for it. In the game John spent the whole time redeming himself with missions, getting his family back. I was expecting an ending where the feds kill his family and he and bonnie take off further into the west, Airzona, California, Oregon and blaze a new path and possible a new game. Rock Star should have come up with maybe a different alternate ending that is downloadable for fans that want the ending to be different, and those that like it the way it is .. status quo. Just my thoughts on it

  82. Awesome ending if you want a happy nothing bad can ever happen to the main person in the story ending then stick to farie tales

  83. the ending was nothing less then retarded… i coulda mashed them double crossing pigs easily… throughout the game we all killed way worse groups of enimies then that. John was a badass and jack’s clearly a little pansy, i havnt played the second ending yet, the first ending to me was the only ending i miss John. fuck rockstar.

  84. Rob has the right idea, Rockstar could have ended the game by killing off Abigail, instead of John, and not ruined the game for 90% of us. (Bonnie Seemed like a better match for John anyways.) John could have easily merked the dozen or so men outside, like he did so many times throughout the game, with a little help from Jack, it wouldn’t have been all the farfetched either, seeing as if my mother OR wife was just killed, I’d be going apeshit (this scenario would have given us good reason to respect Jack a little as well.) That piece of trash Ross could have even escaped leading into a good story for the second game where John AND Jack, revenge Abigail (which would make for an amazing multiplayer co-op campaign, or at least add a sidekick.) “Red Dead Revenge” uh huh.

but I wont dive anymore into the impossible, I’ll just say, that if the second game isn’t titled, “Red Dead Revival”, and Jack doesn’t magically come back i’m sure as sh** not playing it. :)

  85. my only wish was that the honor points would somehow influence the ending… though that may not be the case im satisfied with the ending… like gta 4 the ending always sends an emotional chill down your spine and reminding u once again the reality of the world and that is crime does not pay… no matter how u try sometimes, righting the wrong does not erase the wrong u have done if that makes any sense.

  86. This game was about the death of the Wild West and John Marston was the symbol of it, so he had to die as well. I can’t believe that so few here found it refreshing that the game’s story was written to stand on its own, rather than have a cheesy lead-in for a sequel.

Yes, Jack Marston’s voice was annoying, but he was still young and a few years of hard living could easily make him sound much grittier if there is a sequel starring him. But again, this game was about the transition of America into the modern age. It wouldn’t make sense to have a sequel with Jack as a gunslinger like his father. Maybe he moves to San Francisco and we have a bridge to the GTA series, but I’d say it’s more likely that if there is a follow-up, it’s a prequel bridging Revolver (spaghetti) and Redemption (gritty). Maybe a game where you play as John in his younger days, running around as a true outlaw.

  87. I don’t get this whole “keep John alive so you can do a sequel” nonsense.

That’s not Rockstar’s style at all.

In every GTA, you play as a different lead character. Carl Johnson from San Andreas lived… did that mean he had to star in GTA4?

They can EASILY continue the Red Dead saga without John Marston. In fact, all of these comments about “saving” John Marston is EXACTLY why the ending was so perfect. They spent so much time making you care about a character and actually feel for a character, that when he died it actually bothered people.

That’s storytelling 101 right there, people… make people love your lead character, and you’ve done a perfect job of storytelling.

As other have said… Red Dead Redemption is actually Red Dead 2. The Marstons had nothing to do with Red Dead Revolver. And if there’s a Red Dead 3, the Marstons will almost certainly not be in that game, as well. Rockstar NEVER carries over storylines… it’s the best way to kill a story, by overusing it.

They will come up with a new character. He may not be as incredible as John Marston was. But John Marston was a killer, and a legacy cowboy. For him to continue living, settle down and do something tame like running a ranch or becoming a politician would make him boring. Instead, he went out in a blaze of glory, doing all he could to protect the family he worked to hard to reclaim.

Kudos to Rockstar. The greatest story that’s ever been told in a video game, topped up with a climax ending that shocked people and showed the world exactly how good the storytelling actually was.

  88. You all can say what you want about this game. How John died was horrible and this and that, but you obviously all failed to see the message that this game had.

Like it or not, most storyline games like this have a message. RockStar kind of conveyed the message that you can never run from your past. John was in gang, got shot and left the gang with his wife and son. He tried to put that past him, but the government knowing his past, made him hunt down his old friends. After doing so, John tried to leave his past behind again and raise his family. The Army and Ross come after him, once again because of his past. The only way he could finally leave his past, and have his family leave their past, was to sacrifice himself. Another message the game conveyed, was that you almost always become like your father. John never wanted Jack to become like him, he wanted him to have a normal life and have an honest profession. After his fathers death and his mothers passing, he become ALOT like his father. I speak for most men out there who think their not like their fathers, but the truth is, we are all like our fathers.

I’m happy that John died. I’m sad and hurt that they killed off an AMAZING main character, probably the best they ever came out with, but in killing John, they proved he was a man of courage. It takes guts to willing give in to your own death, especially to save your family. John died a courageous and heroic martyr. Those of you who have a wife and kids (or just a wife) would agree you would do anything to protect your family, and John clearly shows his love and desire for his family to live normally. While this didn’t happen with Jack, John made the ultimate sacrifice to protect those he loved.

  89. Also, judging by the HUGE success of this game (I myself just picked it up again to replay it) I could see RockStar producing a mini game prequel (much like The Lost and The Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony from GTA4)that portrays John in his early stage. Maybe you “court” Abigail? I think with this game, RockStar has a limitless amount of possibilites. They could always make a game set back further in time (early to mid 1800s). I wouldn’ expect them to divulge into WWI style games though, that’s pretty much been done to death.

  90. Marston could live a peaceful rest of his life. Jack hunting down Ross to fulfill his/our need for revenge is perfect because we all wanted that bastard to pay. After it’s done you’re still left feeling empty. Killing Ross doesn’t make the anger and sadness go away. Kind of like in Braveheart when he kills the guy that killed his wife.

The only thing I would have added to the ending would have Jack lie to Ross and say that he beat, raped, hog tied and drowned his wife, and put a bullet in his brothers head.

  91. It was the perfect ending for those who have a sense of story telling. There was no way that a man like John Marston could live a peaceful rest of his life.

  92. They need to make a part 2 to this game it would make it alot better but anyways loved the game great graphics and everything made me feel like i was in the old wild west.

  93. Actually I was waiting for John to bang the mcfarlane chick at her ranch. She wanted some marston in her.

  94. This game had a message all right…the guys at rockstar said,”hey we made a few flaws in red dead revolver but we can still fix the mistakes” so red dead redemption was born, basically a more intense and dramatic version of red dead revovler. And of course like all rockstar games it had a great script.

  95. The end was a pile of junk, garabge, trash, and bullsh1t. SERIOUSLY, we didnt know much about that son of a whore Jack. And when we met that asswipe at the farm that idiot, he was some cheeky ass bastard, wish John pulled his high power pistol on him and shot him in the face like how Nastas got it. The dude is covered in weapons, dynamite, molotovs, pistols and revovlers, semi-auto shotguns, and military issue rifles and snipers, but he goes out there and pulls out a pistol, wtf? you can clear them easy, just toss a stick of dynamite. For that John Marston you’re a punk, and Jack you’re a jackass. When you get that stranger mission going for Edgar. I hogtied his wife and burned her alive and shot her in the head 3 times, the same goes for his brother toast with a couple of holes in his head.

Granted, I agree with the whole thing about the west dying and John was a symbol of it. Yeah okay, but we dont need John to be in the next red dead. The problem is, Jack Marston is a b1tch, I’d rather control Abigail Marston than that stupid ass cunt. His stupid ass goatee, and trying hard to be his father, what happened to writing you cum guzzling ass munching pig that masterbates in his own sweat! God damn Jack Marston, I pray you go down with the West, I actually wish I lost the duel to Edgar Ross, so that Jack could die and thats it. Rockstar could’ve atleast released an open ending depending on what you do in the final moments of the game or you’re decisions in the story, when red dead gave me a decision to do something or not, I thought it would impact the games story but hell no it doesn’t. Rockstar you really have Hacked me off, if this was a movie great ending but for a video game, I dont feel like controling that big nosed, goatee growing, long haired homosexual. John actually looked rough with long hair, he just looks like a male prostitute, just like his mother. Go write a book and not hutn bandits you stupid ass fool I hate you JACK!

  96. Has no one here EVER seen butch casidy! I though it was going to end (and would have been a fine end) at the barn.

Go to dead eye, pick targets , shots ring out , freeze frame – credits

  97. Maybe people need help with choosing the right system, or maybe you need the p90x system right away, whatever it is, you will find it worth dinmomnidzyc.

  98. it would make no sense to play Red Harlow in a sequel because he was Uncle there’s obvious facts the Glove. the same nose & eye color i mean why use the Signature features of Red Harlow if it wasn’t him?

  99. Why all the bitching? The ending was a shocker and so many developers fail to make good endings after brilliant stories. That’s a fact. Yeah Jack isn’t as good as John but I don’t think he’s meant to be. The idea is, as far as I’m concerned, to have done everything except Jack’s one stranger mission by the time you get to the last mission. You have no real reason to be endeared to Jack as you were meant to with John.
The ending was brilliant and completely out of the blue. I was expecting your usual GTA against all odds task. Find some cover and kill em all! Reunite with your family and ride off into the sunset for a quiet life elsewhere. But this way was brilliant. I say well done Rockstar for a a thought provoking and emotional ending. I consider myself pretty desensitised but when John said goodbye to his family I felt that and when he was gasping for air I felt that too. Awesome stuff!

  100. WTF Loved this game but felt pissed of when John died then really PISSED off when abigail dies. But stop complaining it was agood ending with lots of thought and emotion in it. Sure I could have easily taken out those ten guys but then the story wouldnt feel as if it had ended. John and his family would be hunted down till they were all dead. He made a sacrifice to save his family. And sure Jack certainly isnt John but he isnt that bad.

  101. The ending was sooooooooo lame, throughout the game John was a superhuman killing machine who could drop 5/6 guys before they could even get a round off and had a unique ability to cover behind the flimsiest of objects under a hailstorm of bullets without so much as a scratch. However come John’s death the developers decided to add a sense of ‘realism’ it’s obviously apparent 1 guy would not be able to defeat 10/15 military personell attacking him but you cannot just add this ‘realism’ now to suit your ‘ending’ but include it at no other point in the game. He could have and would have climbed to the higher floor and shot out of the window or left through the back of the barn and killed the guys in a matter of seconds (obviously not realistic but is in keeping with the rest of the game).

Alternatively John could have been killed when Dutch died as Ross took your only weapon in that cut-scene to shoot Dutch. Also the ranch work missions should have been at the start of the game as to allow the player to form an attachment to abigail and jack and then have them taken away as I found I was far more attached to Bonnie but maybe thats just because she was kind of hot and abigail was a dog ‘yeah animation porn’.

Anyhow a game is a game and thats all it should be, it should be taken on face value, in effect RDR is GTA set 100 years earlier but slightly better. Leave the deep underlying, twisting plot lines for films and literature as they do not work in games, especially sandbox games where by vary definition the player has control of the character and his actions within an open environment. You could go on 200+ civilian killing sprees, dynamite and firebomb the Mcfarlane house as I did to get the $5000 bounty trophy and in what way was this in keeping with John’s new life and the dialogue/actions in the cut scenes and the theme of redemption throughout. (Plus why not just submit a pardon letter to Ross or his superiors as this worked for my $9600 bounty). Also the passing of time in the game was so lame I set a Chinese worker free, in the cut scene it said several weeks had past in actuality it was 3 days that passed. Also John was surely racing against the clock to hunt these guys down and be reunited with his family and yet he’s quite happy to spend several days hunting foxes (much to my annoyance) for hunter tasks and helping random strangers that only further delayed him from his main (would have been sole) objective.

Yes I understand the reason behind John’s death, the coming of a new age, a fathers sins, the son being forced into the life John never wanted for him and all that rubbish but it just doesn’t work in a game where you have control of the character and can perform actions that completely contradict the main theme of the game namely redemption without any consequence or change to the story at all.

Plus the actual ending was just as lame as John’s death anyway. It was almost as bad as the ending to Fallout 3 it seems that tragic endings are replacing happy endings as the new gaming Cliché. Basically it seems as though they decided that John’s death would be the end of the game but that somehow the player still needed the option to carry on playing as in not another fallout 3 so of course the answer is that you play as his son which was the final nail for me as this was completely pointless as was the killing of Ross and his wife/brother as there was no character development or attachment to Jack at all so I really felt no need to avenge John’s death.

  102. There is no Redemption.

I’m sorry, but the ending was absolutely b.s.
Have I ever seen a western? Hmmm.. which one is the one that was 50 hours long and you had control over the main character??

The only thing I saw from this was that there’s no point in reformation. Why should anyone reform when no matter what you do (Legendary Fame, Heroic Honor) you’re screwed if you stole from a few banks?? Now we hear that Marston had a “dark past” but I don’t recall him ever saying he did evil, mostly that he was there when it happened… I find it pathetic really and “forced”, as all of a sudden a guy who was basically under witness protection for turning states evidence, has the Feds roll up Ruby-ridge style? Bull.

As far as I’m concerned, John lives to a ripe old age with his wife, and that pathetic and waste of an ending,as well as the Undead nightmare, are the fantasies dreamed up in the mind of Jack from reading it in a book… Otherwise I’d just take Jack on a killing spree and take out every cop/fed/clerk I could find… though I might do that anyway, thank god I have a save game before the last Dutch mission….

  103. jhon risked his life to save his family but i think he didnt have to die. it put on dead eye for me but i acsidentily stoped it so i think that i coulde have killed them all

  104. The point about a lack of continuity in that the main character was superhuman throughout the game then was killed like that I think is somewhat fair (it was more enemies in that deadeye mode than i had experienced before at least). but i still think it was a visceral and innovative ending to a ‘triple a’ game, especially considering playing as his son with a limited amount of content presumably (hopefully) as a prelude to the sequel. I thought it was brilliant.

  105. i hate whining little p*ssy’s who b*tch about everything somebody else invented (namely video games)…why don’t you try and make a game yourself…come up with a story…write the story..learn programming and graphics programming…create a graphics engine…then, build the game yourself…you can have whatever ending you like then. obviously rockstar wanted john dead..made sense…if you didn’t like it then sell your fucking copy…i don’t think any of you could do any better…just a bunch of fucking trolls on a video game site bitching about something they wouldn’t ever in a hells year be able to actually pull off themselves. this is just about what every gaming site has come to…trolls in their parents basements crying about what the devs should have done to suit their needs…grow up and let the devs create the game to their taste with their artistic dreams…this is what these guys went to school to do with their lives…code your own fucking game and let the devs alone…devs are pushed more and more these days by companies b/c of people like you who threaten to boycott knowing good and god damn well that they’ll buy every last thing that comes out from these guys…we’re losing the artistic imaginative side of gaming b/c company’s are scared of being boycotted…fuck what you want…if you want it your way become a dev…psn ConfirmedChaos

  106. So, who says all games have to have a happy ending? Thats not how life works, unlike most people i dont mind having my nice little insignifigant life upset when all is not fluffy bunnies and rainbows. I was dissapoionted at first cause i thought killing em would be a series ender, but no, it aint. How bout, beat the game, get undead nightmare and POOF, johnnie boys back. Lol
Regardless, i thought this was a great game, woulda like a coop aspect other than free roam but i can see how they didnt include that.

  107. PS @CHAOS, you do understand that whiny little sissified people who post on games forums, ulimatly da have a say. If i was (and im waaaaay not) a developer, id be reading these things daily to help improve the next game, so I say, whiny little sissies keep on whinnin, cause if its a game i like, imma play it regardless what you think, but thanks fopr your imput.

  108. Wow. Anyone who hates the ending is, for lack of a better word, dumb. This is the great western ending. The anti-hero against the unbeatlable force. To die “with his boots on in a hail of gunfire” is the classic western finale. I realize we live in happy googoo, feel good, everybody wins and gets a ribbon b.s. kind of society, but come on. Watch some old Easwtwood or John Wayne westerns. Or better yet, look up some old dimestore western novels. These were the direct influence on this game and the ending portrays it perfectly. As far as the “continuity” complaints, get over it. John HAS to die for his family to live. That is the point. Plain. Simple. Beautiful.

  109. loved the ending shot dudes wife shot his brother then shot the dude that killed my dad then road around killing ever law men i could find loads of fun

  110. it wont matter if you kill all the lawmen waiting at the barn it will be like ghost shooting you and jack is so ugly i cried at the end and jack just had stick with his father hunting bill that would be better
i but 85 holes in edhar rosses fucking head

  111. i just dont understand y bill didnt want help from jhon oh and dont complete flowers for a lady

im 8 rdr was the coolest of all bestest game even than fallot 3

  112. I myself didn’t mind playing as jack at the end..i would of preferred to play as John but Jack reminds me of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean and he was a bad ass so its okay.

  113. If you play RDR Undead Nightmare, at the end when you see John’s grave after Seth takes the Aztec mask from the burial site from Escalera, you come back as zombie John SO HE DOES COME BACK TO LIFE

  114. Danny you are an absolute moron, go and eat a bowl of dick. Didnt your momma tell you not to speak if you don’t know what the hell your talking about. RDR is loosely based on Red dead revolver. Red dead redemption is epic, the story is epic, the characters are epic (maybe jack is a bit whiny they should have give him a better voice) the gameplay is epic and the ending is epic. if you cant handle a good ending and are whining about how bad it is why dont you stfu and enjoy it the way it is meant to be. EPIC!

  115. Personally, I think that ending was F’N AMAZING. Yes, Jack is pretty annoying, and sadly, you don’t get to play John again, but I had no idea it was coming and I felt like it was the perfect closure to John’s story. He just wanted to protect his family and he died doing it. And honestly, he actually died whenever we would accidently die throughout the course of the game. That scene just made it more poetic and beautiful. I actually thought the game was going to end after you kill Van Der Linde, so having missions with John’s family was an awesome surprise! And then having John die was not only shocking but it was a real tear jerker. And then reappearing as a playable, Jack? Come on now… that’s pretty damn innovative and unexpected and fun.

I do agree with folks who say that they hope the sequel doesn’t involve Jack. I don’t think he’s a very likeable character to play an entire game with. I think what would be dope is to have the next game be the PREQUEL! It be awesome to play John and Abigail when they were running with Van Der Linde. That and/or play as Abigail during that 3 years inbetween her death and John’s (which I made up a story in my head that they were still being chased by the military and/or gangs).

Either way… AMAZING GAME! AMAZING ENDING! AMAZING STORY! I got so excited when I completed that last mission that I rushed onto my laptop to share my excitedment everyone else.

  116. Horrible ending. Would be good if it were a movie, but in an open world/GTA type game where you continue to play after finishing the story missions, it’s horrible. Jack SUCKS, I can’t stand playing as him. Anyone will pale in comparison to John, but Jack’s has a pussy ass voice and looks kinda retarded. And all throughout the game you’re looking forward to finishing everything and getting 100% completion with John, not some 19 year old pussy. I was extremely disappointed by the ending. Again, this is a game, not a fucking movie, pull your heads out of your asses Rockstar. You really ruined the game by killing off john. Now I have no desire to keep playing or get 100% completion, it’s not even fun anymore.

If you ever pull anything like this again, I swear I’ll never buy another Rockstar game again. You owe me $40

  117. @Rageaginsthaters

“Wow. Anyone who hates the ending is, for lack of a better word, dumb. This is the great western ending. “……actually, YOURE dumb. The ending would be good for a movie. This is a game, not a movie. You keep playing after the final story missions are done, and so now you’re stuck with an unlikeable character with a horrible sissy ass voice and ugly ass face permanently. I have no desire to even keep playing now, I won’t be going for 100% completion. You play through the whole game wtih this character, a great, likeable player that you get to know really well, then they kill him off and you never see him again. WTF? What if they killed off Tommy Vercetti in Vice City? Or CJ in San Andreas? And John is a more epic character than either of those

So no, sorry, YOU’RE the dumb one.

  118. well the last enemy that shall be destroyed symbolizes the end of Dutch’s gang, John killed Javier, Bill, and Dutch, the last person in that gang was John. So the Gov’t Agents went after John, the last enemy of the agents and destroyed him, therefore the last enemy that shall be destroyed was John Marston

  119. When I finished the storyline, after getting a sons vengeance for the death of his father(and all that hounding from the law), I looked at the map. I felt lost. And a little empty. I turned off my console and didnt put RDR back into it for about 4months. Was I supposed to feel like this Rockstar? Yeah and jack was a little irritating. If a sequel should come, I reckon they should set it about 20 years previous, with new characters, but you should bump into a young John Marston along the way. Maybe showing how he gets the scars? Could be cool.

  120. I liked the end. It was like playing an actual movie. I’ve never played a game that made me feel like I was actually playing movie that wasn’t based off a movie. I also liked how it would indicate that days/weeks would pass between parts for the strangers’ quests. Back then, it would’ve taken a day maybe even more to get between towns. It was not like nowadays where we jump in the automobile and go from L.A to Vagas in not even half a day. And Jack? He’s like a diamond in the rough! Either he’ll get wacked, or he’ll get toughened up and become a badass like his pa. Or maybe he’ll have son and name him Sue.

  121. The ending threw me off a bit if I had a choose I would have called my horse to the back of the barn rode a safe distance and picked them off one by one although there was no choose in that. I had to get used to jack but the remember my family mission was a nice touch because I somehow got to get out of the quick draw and just shoot him in the pond with my semi auto shotgun.
Also the only relationship between red dead revolver and rdr was bonnie and the ranch.

  122. The first time I played he freaken died and then I downloaded some cheats and do y’all no what happen those F’ers made him die his son is ok but I just hate that he had to die I was so mad I felt like the guy on silver lineings playbook when he got mad about the girl dieing in the end of a book He was reading and chunked the book out the window and woke his parents up at 3:00 in the morning

  123. I know its just a game and all but just got really attached to him when I downloaded those cheats I was like hell yea lets see if those basterds kill me now but I just have to say those cheats did help like I was doing a mission in Mexico well when I was shooting a bunch of people but oh well no use in crying over it I guess because it’s just a game I seriesly could have done a lot better on the end yea I played the first time when Jack was at his familys grave yard I

  124. I know its just a game and all but just got really attached to him when I downloaded those cheats I was like hell yea lets see if those basterds kill me now but I just have to say those cheats did help like I was doing a mission in Mexico well when I was shooting a bunch of people but oh well no use in crying over it I guess because it’s just a game I seriesly could have done a lot better on the end yea I played the first time when Jack was at his familys grave yard I called my and when I made the horse go faster I was like what the heck is that is that his voice this was disappointing it sounded like a little girl talking he’s like 18 19 his voice should be deep by now but I aggrie with some of yall about the part where he sacrificed hes self to save his family

  125. Wow, but seriously why didn’t the 2 government agents just kill john right after Dutch died. Then his family wouldn’t have to go through the pain of seeing him dead. What was the point of letting him reunite with his family then kill him. It would have been nicer of them. Also if I was john I would have killed the two government agents down by the spot Dutch died, throw them in the river and say the died in the attack!

  126. I really love the game. But I would like Rockstar to have Gold mining and Gold panning sheriff Job farming etc in it for the more real feeling . I hope it will come a game where you can live the wild west life.. Ehum. Psst check out the plans for frontier1859 on the Internet. Its just that they seem to look for funds for more than 10 years now ..

Doc “You are not a god!”
Billy the kid “Why dont you pull the trigger and find out?”

From the movie Young Guns II
