One of the most talked about topics at this year’s GamesCon is the Sony Playstation 3. With all the rumors flying around the net, everyone was wondering if this would finally be when Sony officially announced the new, slim PS3 model. Well, it’s official, Sony has finally confirmed that it is indeed coming this September. Aside from the PS3 Slim news, they were a lot of other big announcements from Sony.
PlayStation 3 Slim- Great!
The announcement of the Playstation 3 Slim while awesome, wasn’t exactly a surprise. Images of it started popping up online back before even E3 and while we looked at it with skeptisim, the evidence eventually won most of us over. Sony is known for it’s slimmer, sexier rereleases, they did it with the PS1, the PS2, and even the PSP, so naturally PS3 was next in line. While the system does look cool, it’ll be interesting to see how well it runs against its fatter counter part.
Playstation 3 Slim Price $299 vs. Playstation 3 Phat Price Drop $299.99?
Honestly, if you still do not have a PS3, I would prefer to get the Slim one because you will be getting the same features except the hard drive. The PS3’s hard drive is replaceable and you can upgrade it to any size. The Phat one is heavier while the Slim is 33% lighter and slimmer.
Reliability? That I can’t comment on just yet.
New PS3 Firmware… Features similar to XBOX Live?
The new features of the upcoming firmware for the Playstation 3 have been revealed. With so many things improved like the premium themes and avatars coming, the Playstation 3 XMB is looking to be like the XBOX 360’s Channel blades. How? Look at the way the game channels are on both system… Don’t they look the same?
PSPGo Minis Downloadable Games.. $1.99? $1?
With the PSPGo launching soon, Sony announced that there will be games that will be exclusively for the PSPGo. These PSP games are similar to the arcade games you see and they will cost $1.99 or less. Most games announced are Pacman, Sudoku and others similar to those. 50 games have been revealed so far, but this sounds very promising.
This feature is indeed good and there is no doubt people will be loving these. If you like arcade games on the go, this would be a good idea. Since the game would be less than 100MB, it will be fast enough for people to download.

I really don’t care much about the colors of the PSP but three of them are indeed coming!
PSP Digital Comics- Great Idea!
The announcement of the Digital Comics is one of the exciting new features. The idea of reading comics on the go is one of the things most of the young people want to do and it is a great addition to the PSPGo, and PSP Slim.
Congrats Sony, 23.7 Million PS3 Sold
Since its release, Sony has sold 23.7 million PS3 units and with that, Sony is finally releasing PS3 Slim. I just hope it will continue the success.
VERDICT
Overall, the most exciting news, while cool, was once again spoiled. The PS3 slim would have been a much bigger hit had it not been all over the internet for over a month. Still, it’s nice to finally have some closure on the rumor, and the reduced price makes it all that much sweeter! We look forward to see what Sony has lined up for us next month at the Tokyo Game Show. Until then readers!
