As of January 1st, 2013, the country of Australia can now sell video games with an R18+ rating.
Australia was one of the few countries in the world that failed to have an R18+ rating for video games. Before 2013 kicked in, the maximum classification rating games could receive was MA15+.
This meant games that were too violent for persons 15 years and older were effectively banned. Even a popular game like the recent Mortal Kombat game was banned as it was too deemed too violent at the time.
Thanks to the Australian government passing the legislation last year, Australian gamers can now enjoy mature video games without them being banned or heavily censored like they were before.
