In the past month of August game sales have been particularly high. Highly anticipated sequel Darksiders 2 managed to top NPD’s Top 10 sellers of the month, but still only managed to sell 247k copies. Recently appointed THQ president Jason Rubin stated that in the future he only wanted to focus on games with the greatest potential, but is this the case with Darksiders 2? Is this the best THQ has in their current line up of games?
With sales like these that are likely less than expected, it makes people wonder if the franchise will survive and continue beyond the latest release. Sales analyst Michael Patcher claims “I think that the sales are below what they had hoped for. I presume it sold around 500,000 globally in the first two weeks (the NPD cutoff was Aug 25), so it’s probably over 1 million now, but my understanding is that breakeven is greater than 2 million units, so it’s not likely to get much higher than that,”
Though Darksiders 2 was generally well received, sales are what tend to matter when it comes to continuing a franchise, so this may or may not lead to discussions of ending it. Time will tell what will happen to the Darksiders franchise, as well as the studio in charge. Hopefully the best happens for them, but we will keep you posted as new developments occur.

September 9, 2012 at 6:56 AMGrant Gaines, that is one of the reasons I generally wait on games. It’s not like I can afford to spend money on every game I kinda want anyways, and stuff like this turns me away from all of the company’s future products.
Right now I’m pre-ordering Playstation All-Stars on the Vita for $35 and I’m planning on getting Ratchet & Clank: FFA and maybe some digital PSP and PSone titles that go on sale in the future. Other than that, I don’t think I’ll be making any other video game purchases this year. Games are an expensive habit, and even though I don’t do much else with my time but play video games I cannot afford $60 games or even just $40 games I really really want. I learned when I was young that I won’t be ready to purchase full-price games until I have a great job that pays very well, until then I’d rather wait a month or two after release(or a year and a half after release, that’s more common with me) and purchase the game at a fraction of its price. Games are just way too expensive these days, it’s one of the reasons I’m a handheld gamer.

September 9, 2012 at 11:41 AMDarksiders 2 is a mixed bag of better and worse from its predecessor. I wont go into specifics here, but the bottom line is that the game was great and was worth every penny. I am on my second playthrough and am about 6 hours away from my second run of 100%the completion.
There is plenty to see and do here and any who have missed the opportunity to enjoy darksiders 22 should make a run to the store and pick it up.
If darksiders 3 comes, i can only see good things! (Woot for famine and pestilence!)
