Just last month Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning saw the release of its first DLC, The Legend of Dead Kel. Us here at Just Push Start loved the new content and found the change of pace refreshing. Because of those reasons, and a few more, we awarded the game an 8.5/10 (our readers loved it even more, giving it a 9.5). That’s a high bar to set for the initial DLC and 38 Studios is wasting absolutely no time in providing their players with the next expansion, titled Teeth of Naros.
Moving away from the pirate theme of the preceding add-on content, Teeth of Naros takes players to a new region called Teeth of Naros (see where the DLC name came from?) which is home to the floating city Idylla. More importantly, it’s home to a whole new race. The Kollossae are towering stone giants that follow a Greek theme, both in their clothing of choice and their architectural design. The land is filled with turmoil and it’s up to the Fateless One to come in and solve all of their problems, as usual. Can the latest gameplay extension provide players with a fun new campaign? Better yet, can it match or exceed the offerings found in its predecessor, The Legend of Dead Kel?
Let’s find out if 38 Studios succeeded again in our review of the Teeth of Naros DLC.
HOT
Several Hours of Gameplay Added
Matching the previous DLC installment, Teeth of Naros adds over 6 hours of gameplay for those who plan on exploring every location and completing every side quest. The DLC starts out with the Fateless One locating Heylc, who is about to embark on a dangerous journey to the Teeth of Naros through the Southern Passage. Through an unfortunate turn of events, the group that accompanied you into the Southern Passage does not end up making it out the other end. The main character is spoken to by Ethene, the goddess that the Kollossae look upon in favor. Upon entering the new land of Teeth of Naros, our character is thrown into the Kollassae’s problems fairly quickly and so begins this new adventure.
The Fateless One (or the errand boy as every tends to see him) must help restore the Kollossae to their former glory in the eyes of their gods. You’ll traverse the lands helping Primos Anokatos, the spiritual leader of the Kollassae, regain his race’s reputation. During this time, you’ll explore the open fields of Teeth of Naros , a slew of new dungeons, the floating city of Idylla and its monster-infested sewer system. As you’d expect, aside from the main story mission there are many Kollassae as well as a contract board that will enlist your special expertise to complete various tasks. You’ll be fetching items, killing designated targets, such as Silverback Trolls, and watering sacred plants (no, I’m not kidding) over the course of the DLC. If you’ve invested countless hours into Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning already, then you have a pretty solid idea of what kind of quest types to expect upon starting up Teeth of Naros.
New Armor and Weapons
Additional hours of gameplay wouldn’t mean much to RPG fans if there wasn’t new enticing loot awaiting them at the end of their journey. Teeth of Naros contains new items that you won’t find anywhere else in the land of Amalur. Of course, this means you’ll have to stray from the main quest to clean out dungeons and fulfill the demands of the inhabitants to obtain the rare pieces. Notable items include the Remnant armors set, The Naros Fang (the hammer’s head is the broken fang of Naros, the troll god) and The Titan Spear. The first half of The Titan Spear’s description is as follows: “No one is certain what being might have been large enough to both craft and wield the spear that this sword was once a part of.” Yes, you can obtain a greatsword that once made up the tip of a Titan’s spear. The weapons and armor reflect the Greek and Roman themes seen throughout the Kollassae’s region. Feel free to use these on the new enemies, such as the massive flightless birds called Ptyrex. Assuming you haven’t leveled your character up higher than 20, which I’m sure many of you have, you might find some of these items useful. At the very least, they’re entertaining to look at.
38 Studios knows how to craft gorgeous environments and Teeth of Naros certainly reflects that. The main land consists of rolling hills made up of vibrant greens surrounded by a moss covered mountain range. Idylla sports beige colored stone buildings, pillars and statues. Even the sewers and dark dungeons are a pleasure to run through with their purple and blue accents. The varied environments keep things fresh, even if you’re running a fetch quest for the hundredth time.
