Man vs. Machine was a game made to achieve one goal: showcase some pretty impressive technology, and yesterday it did that. How? By breaking the record for number of people in one multiplayer FPS match of course. Yesterday Man vs. Machine hosted a match with an abolsoutely staggering 999 participants, smashing the previous world record for most players in a single online match.
The match was a one off and was designed to showcase the networking technology of Sweedish non-propfit organisation MuchDifferent.
The unity engine, which Man vs. Machine was running on, is designed to allow hundreds upon hundreds of players to connect simultaniously to one another lag free.
The company are now looking to put its technology in the hands of developers for future commercial use.
The idea of playing in a multiplayer match with 1,000 people, lag free, is absoloutely insane. Generally I’m happy if I can get a 16 player match without jutters in the connection, but if fire-fights of this magnitude become possible then you certainly wont see me complaining!
The event has been confirmed as a record breaker, and will make it into the next edition of the Guiness Book of Records: Gamer Edition
