In the wake of the music game wars, what has the developer of Rock Band series, Harmonix, been doing?
Well, delivering weekly DLC songs for over its 200th week is certainly one of them. However if you’re interested in where Harmonix envision the Rock Band franchise going forward, Harmonix have stated in a recent interview that the series will see a “fundamental reinterpretation” in the future.
Speaking in a recent interview senior VP of product development Greg LoPiccolo, co-founder and CTO Eran Egozy, and co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos sat down and discussed Harmonix, their ex-publishers and their franchises going forward.
“I’d love to talk at great length about that, of course. I’m reluctant to say too much about where we’re headed with it right now, except to reiterate that it’s a pretty radical departure,” said Rigopulos.
According to Harmonix, the Rock Band franchise and rhythm games as a whole, still have “a lot of creative life” left in them, and Harmonix are eager to be the ones pushing the boundaries.
“It’s interesting. We do have plans on where we’re going to go with Rock Band and how we plan to expand it. All I’ll say for now is that it isn’t what you think. You might assume we’re going to add saxophone or something along those lines, but no, the kind of direction we’re planning on taking Rock Band, the kind of innovation we have in mind, is taking it in a different direction, one that’s more suitable to the kind of environment we’re in, what people are doing now, what they’re interested in playing now, versus, say, 2007.”
Perhaps some kind of rhythm/FPS is in order? Speaking as someone who has a vast library of songs in his Rock Band library this interview has gotten me intruiged. A bold new direction in the plastic instrument genre? I can only be surprised at what Harmonix have to show us in the future.
