During an interview with NowGamer, Avni Yerli, co-founder of Crytek, talked a little about the absence of Timesplitters 4.
Obviously Timesplitters, historically, was for [Crytek UK] an important IP.
Now, you may be thinking, “Hey! That wasn’t Crytek. Free Radical brought that franchise to life.” And you’d be right to think so. In case you missed it, Crytek purchased Free Radical back in 2009 which expanded the company into the UK (hence Crytek UK). So there you have it. Crytek UK is the formerly known company Free Radical Design. Now that we are done with that historical gaming fact, let’s move on.
Avni Yerli went on to say:
From our perspective we always had a lot of fun playing Timesplitters – Timesplitters 2 was amazing fun. Crytek and Crytek UK are interested in the IP; we are thinking about it but we’re trying to decide what we could do best with the IP, where we could bring it. There are no concrete plans yet
Earlier this year, there were rumors circulating that Timesplitters 4 was going to launch on next-gen consoles, specifically Xbox 720, which had been rumored to be announced at E3 2011. Even better, the game was rumored to be using the Cry Engine 3. As we all know, no such announcement was made. With the team at Crytek UK stating that they are still deciding what to do with the IP, it is very possible that we won’t see the game until Sony and Microsoft roll out their next consoles.
At one point during the course of the interview, NowGamer suggested that the team make an HD collection of past Timesplitters titles. Yerli responded accordingly:
That’s a good idea! There are indeed a lot of games doing it but we haven’t thought about that yet. But it’s a good idea…
We have seen numerous games receive the next-gen boost. We’ve seen God of War, Prince of Persia, etc etc. We even have Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil getting the same treatment at the end of the year. So I see no reason why Timesplitter couldn’t join the bunch. It’d be a nice break from the ordinary and would hopefully remind old fans why the loved the series in the first place.
Hopefully, come next E3 we will have solid evidence of another entry in the series.
