The Sony PS4 Pro will not be able to play 4K Blu-ray discs at the moment. This has been confirmed by many journalists that attended the PlayStation Meeting yesterday.
Engadget’s Richard Lawler tweeted: “Confirmed: No Ultra HD Blu-ray in the PS4 Pro. Only 4K video via streaming/apps.”
This is sad news if you want the new console but your internet speed is not up to par. Streaming 4K videos can be troublesome on as standard ADSL connection. Furthermore, the recently released Xbox One S can play the 4K Blu-ray discs without any problem. That console costs $299 over the $399 for the PS4 Pro.
Microsoft is also intending to make next year’s Scorpio console compatible with 4K Blu-ray discs too. Nobody knows if the Pro can be patched to make them compatible. Some say it’s not possible since 4K Blu-rays require a different type of laser. Sony has yet to further comment on the topic.
Downloading 4K Blu-rays digitally are also going to be a hassle if you go that route. The Batman vs Superman 4K release was over 100GB in size. Here’s hoping Sony updates the Pro in the near future as physical media is needed for those that cannot be bothered relying on the internet.
