If you’re playing through The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and trying to save Termina, chances are your old Kokiri Sword just can’t cut like it used to. For those looking to boost their fighting potential, check out these simple steps to unlock Link’s second-strongest blade in the game.
Before starting this upgrade quest, there are a few things you’ll need to take care of first. Firstly, you’ll need to finish the Snowhead Dungeon and defeat Goht. This will turn the mountain region back into Spring, melting the snow and opening up a couple extra areas. Secondly, you’ll need to be certified to handle powder kegs. If you don’t have this yet, you’ll need to speak to a giant goron in Snowhead Village and pass his test. While the powder kegs themselves don’t carry over when you travel back in time, the certification does. Thirdly, it’s recommended that you start this on a new cycle as the final step involves waiting a night. Simply play the Song of Time to travel back in time then quickly defeat the boss of Snowhead Temple before starting this chain. And lastly, you’ll need about 150 rupees (100 for the upgrades and 50 for the powder keg).
Step One: The Razor Sword
Once the snow has melted, return to the Mountain Village and visit the Smithy directly next to the owl statue. Here, you’ll lend them your Kokiri Sword and 100 Rupees and they will craft you a new sword after one day’s time. Simply play the Song of Double Time (YYLLRR) and change the time to 06:00 on the second day. Here, you can pick up the upgraded Razor Sword. It’s twice as strong as the Kokiri Sword but has the downside of going dull in 100 swings, so try not to use it much until you finish the third step. On a side note, this sword looks so much cooler than anything else Link uses. Why can’t this be the upgraded form?
Step Two: Gold Dust
Assuming you already acquired the Powder Keg Certification from the Gorons, pick up a new Powder Keg from either the Goron in Snowhead Village or at the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town. You’ll use this to blow away the rock leading to the Goron Racetrack (this is the same rock you had to blow up to pass the Certification Test). Here, you’ll test your racing prowess and aim for first place. The reward for winning the goron race is a brand new bottle filled with Gold Dust.
Step Three: The Gilded Sword
With an upgraded Razor Sword and bottle of Gold Dust in hand, return to the Smithy in Mountain Village. He’ll offer to upgrade your sword for free with that Gold Dust you recently picked up. Just as with the Razor Sword, play the Song of Double Time and move forward to the dawn of the third day. Once you pick up the Gilded Sword, you no longer need to visit the Smithy. This upgraded blade has the same power as the Razor Sword but with the added benefits of never losing its durability as well as a new ability to transcend time and go back with you any time you rewind time.
Now, with a stronger sword in hand, it should be easier for you to finally retake Majora’s Mask and save the land of Termina!
