Among the plethora of promising next-generation games that were revealed back at E3 last year, one game that stood out and won a ton of awards was Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall. Now that the game is finally here on Xbox One (and PC), I am pleased to say that Titanfall earned the hype and excitement that the game received over the past several months. For some, it may be just another online shooter game, but in reality there is something about Titanfall that makes it special and stand out from other FPS games on the market.
In Titanfall, you take the role of a human pilot who has the ability to control a specialized mech called a Titan. When controlling the human pilot, you will have all sorts of abilities to help you fight and win in battle. One of the key things that makes Titanfall stand out from the rest of the shooter games out there is the mobility of your character. In a wide and very large map, you have the ability to jump high, walk through walls, and hover around. Unlike the limited options in games like Call of Duty, Titanfall gives you an infinite amount of possibilities on how you can tackle your objectives in the game.
At some point during your ten-minute online match, you will have access to your mech that can help you cause more havoc in the battlefield. You will be notified when it’s time to enter your Titan. You can then simply press the “Down” D-Pad and look for it in the sky as it drops down. When controlling a Titan, you will feel the power is in your hands as you will have access to rockets, guns, a shield that helps you deflect bullets at a certain amount of time and other upgrades that you can unlock later. Sure, having a Titan might make you think that you will prevail in battle but not really.
Controlling a Titan in a big wide open battlefield, you are open to all sorts of attacks, so its imperative to avoid them and keep your Titan alive as much as possible. When at some point your Titan is about to be destroyed, you can eject from it and wait for another two minutes to launch it again. Don’t worry, if you’re excited to use a Titan again, you can decrease the cooldown timer by getting kills.
Shooter fans who are expecting Titanfall to have a campaign will be disappointed. Actually, there is a campaign but it’s done through online multiplayer and the story is not worth trying to follow. You are pretty much just given a mission with little background as to what to do and will be thrown in the battlefield to do your objective. When doing your campaign mission, you will have these tasks that rotates from Attrition which is like Team Deathmatch and Hardpoint which is like Domination. Throughout the nine chapters that you can do, expect an all out war alongside your teammates and AI-controlled teammates that will help you in battle.
During a multiplayer match, it’s not only you and your teammates that will be battling the opposing side. In the two sides that you play as, you will have AI-controlled teammates that will help you do your objective. Yes, they are AI and they are somewhat smart but don’t expect them to do all the kills for you to win one for the team. Whenever you see AI-controlled NPCs on the opposing side like Specter, or Grunt, you can kill them and earn points for the group. At the end of match, attrition kills, Pilot kills (other players), and Titan kills will be listed on the scoreboard and you can see how well you did in a match.
