Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon released nearly a year ago to much acclaim as a return to the Gamecube title from Next Level Games. Now, it has been announced that the developer will be working exclusively for Nintendo in the future, but it doesn’t appear that they have actually been acquired by the gaming giant.
Next Level Games has been working with Nintendo on and off for about a decade now with Nintendo exclusives like Super Mario Strikers and Punch-Out!!, along with some third party titles like Spider-Man: Friend or Foe and Captain America: Super Soldier.
In an interview with Gamasutra, Next Level Games co-founder Jason Carr spoke about how they enjoy the stability of working with someone like Nintendo.
There are a lot of benefits to working with a first party. Nintendo’s great. They give you the time to make the games good. They’ve done really well — the Wii’s done really well, the DS has done really well, the Wii U is not the strongest start but we trust that they’ll come up with something to get it going, and the 3DS was a blast to work on.
Now we have to wait and see what the next big project they are working on for Nintendo will be. Perhaps we will see in an upcoming Nintendo Direct.
