Kickstarter has recently updated their statistics page to show that a whooping $200 million has been pledged towards games.
This figure isn’t entirely made up from videogames with board games also being included, and not all pledges have been successful, but a total of $178 million has been successfully pledged for games. Considering that in 2013 aloe this figure has risen by $112 million it truly shows how the game industry is changing and adapting.
There have been a number of well known game creators turning to crowd funding to create games. Some such as Chris Robert’s Star Citizen raised over $2 million on Kickstarter alone and Double Fine’s Adventure raised a colossal $3.3 million. With more game designers turning to Kickstarter top make the games they want to create I can’t see the amounts of money being pledged dropping any time soon.
