While at Quakecon, id Software co-founder John Carmack chose to give his opinion on the upcoming Xbox One and Playstation 4 during his keynote. While discussing the two, Carmack stated that the two next generation systems are “essentially the same” from what he’s seen so far.
“I haven’t done really rigorous benchmarking [but] they’re very close and they’re both very good. It’s almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are.”
Carmack went on to say that he felt Sony has made larges strides this current generation, especially with the tools that Sony has given to developers. He also mentions how the public’s reaction to the Xbox One initially was a bit of a “witch hunt,” while also saying it would have been good for us as it is the future. He did however bring up that he feels the Kinect “still has some fundamental limitations with the latency and framerate” and that it leads to “poor interaction” when using it.
Quakecon will continue through the weekend, so keep a look out for any other news from the convention.
