When EA announced back in May it was getting rid of online passes, many people assumed this was done because the Xbox One had restrictions on used games anyway. Now that used games can now be played freely on both PS4 and Xbox One, the company said it is still not re-introducing the online pass.
EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told Polygon:
“[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass. It is dead.”
The company is adamant the change was solely on consumer feedback. Hopefully this might encourage other gaming publishers to drop online passes as well. Sony’s dropping them for PS4 games. The only reason online passes existed in the first place was because EA first introduced them back in 2010…
