Activision has laid off about 30 of its staff today. The company wants to release less licensed video games this year.
Here’s what Activision stated on the matter:
“Like any successful business, Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues—this is an ongoing process. In 2013, we expect to release fewer games based on license properties and as a result are realigning our structure to better reflect the market opportunities and our slate. Approximately, 30 full-time employees have been impacted globally, which represents approximately one half of one percent of Activision Blizzard’s employee population. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services.”
There’s a good chance that the company will want to focus on improving the James Bond license. 007 Legends was poorly received by fans and critics. Even though Skyfall was a success at the box office, Bond fans ignored 007 Legends and sales for the game fell far below expectations.
It’s possible they will release new licensed games in 2014 instead. This is when The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Transformers 4 and another James Bond movie will all be out.
