It has been many years since gamers have had a decent boxing game come out on consoles. EA is now more interested in the UFC more than the sport of boxing. Well the boxing drought might change as Floyd Mayweather Jr has hinted that he’s working on a new game possibly on consoles.
TMZ had a chance to interview Floyd Mayweather Jr recently and he confirmed that he is working on something right now. It sounds like it’s not going to be Fight Night Round 5 or anything to do with EA because Mayweather Jr wishes to have some sort of “ownership” in the deal.
The only other developer/publisher that could work on a new boxing game is 2K Sports. 2K Sports worked on Don King Presents: Prizefighter and that came out 10 years ago! It was not as good as EA’s efforts, but technology has changed a lot in the last decade. Imagine playing a realistic boxing game using the same engine in NBA 2K and WWE 2K.
That said, nothing else has been mentioned about the new boxing game other than what Mayweather Jr briefly said to the TMZ interviewer. Hopefully something can be announced at E3 2018 as the video game industry needs a new game for boxing fans around the world.
Mayweather Jr has somewhat retired from in-ring competition (for now), so he should have more than enough time to help out on the video game. It’s more than likely it will be called “Mayweather Jr Boxing” or something along those lines.
