Loot boxes have become a very unpopular feature ever since AAA game publishers pushed their luck in the latter end of 2017. Well it looks like loot boxes are not going away anytime soon because we may see them appear in Dragon Ball FighterZ.
This rumor comes from a user on ResetEra who claims to have an early full copy of the game already. Since we have only played the beta and not the full game itself, this is categorized as a rumor until we or Bandai Namco can officially verify this claim.
That said, it seems feasible for a game like this to add loot boxes. The user got a new avatar for Piccolo via a loot box. Loot boxes can be purchased using real money, although it sounds like they can still be attainable in-game through unlocks.
According to this user, it looks like loot boxes will only be for cosmetic items. This is similar to Overwatch which allows you to open loot boxes in order for you to customize the look of the characters you want to play as.
However, loot boxes reached the dark side literally when EA released Star Wars Battlefront 2 late last year. Instead of cosmetic items, loot boxes were used in order to gain an advantage over other players when playing the game’s online multiplayer mode.
Since fans revolved over loot boxes in Battlefront 2, EA temporarily removed them to save its reputation. Due to EA’s debacle, other game publishers will have to be careful when handling loot boxes in the future. The gambling aspect of loot boxes is dangerous and it is also annoying because you never know what you are going to unlock. Hopefully less loot boxes are included in video games coming out in 2018.
