As you might know already, Xbox Game Pass is a great new service from Microsoft that allows you to download and play full games for just a small monthly fee. It’s kind of like Netflix but used for the gaming industry. Anyway, Xbox Head, Phil Spencer, is confident about the service’s future and feels it will be very beneficial for single player games.
A Twitter user thinks Xbox Game Pass is awesome because it encourages gamers to play different genres that they might not normally play. Phil Spencer agrees and replied with the following response: “I see XGP as both. The value is pretty obvious for some. And the idea of a new model that could open up opportunities for creativity is where I think we’ll end up. Especially for SP games. That’s what the model has done in TV but it’s not an exact analogy.”
Spencer also said that many other third party developers are interested in putting their games onto the Xbox Game Pass in the near future. I have found it useful myself as I got the chance to play the first Darksiders game and NBA Playgrounds as a result of Xbox Game Pass.
Anyway, Spencer said this about 3rd party devs: “We have a lot of interest from studios who want to see how our recent announcement plays out. We’ll lead with our 1P but having XGP turn into a model for more studios is our a goal. And @iocat is a travelling machine…”
Xbox Game Pass could be the future on how we receive games. It’s cool for users, although it might prove to be a problem for physical retailers. One Austrian retailer has already boycotted Microsoft thanks to the service getting all first party games on launch day.
