It’s safe to say the disappointment for the Wii U console is now just a distant memory for Nintendo. This is because the company has rebounded in a big way thanks to the Nintendo Switch console that came out back in March 2017.
Nintendo of America announced the following on Twitter: “Within 10 months, #NintendoSwitch has become the fastest-selling video game system of all time in the US!”
This is impressive considering the numbers could be even higher if Nintendo was able to stock enough units. In the USA, lots of Switch shortages occurred at retail stores because the demand has been too high to keep up.
Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime said: “Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go. Now that many more people have received Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”
The previous record holder in the USA was the Nintendo Wii which was bought by many casual gamers back in 2006. The Switch has also been a powerhouse in Japan with the console selling faster than the PS2 too!
Nintendo was smart to make the Switch a hybrid console. The winning factor is the fact that it can be used both at home or away from home. The Wii U failed mainly because it was underpowered and didn’t allow you to take it anywhere like a portable console.
It will be interesting to see if the Switch can outsell the PS4 which is the best selling console this generation. Sony has shipped over 70 million units of the PS4 so far so there’s a lot of ground for the Switch to cover. A hurdle Nintendo may have to overcome are markets outside of USA and Japan where the brand isn’t as strong.
