December is usually a month when most people buy video game consoles for loved one for Christmas. In one of the biggest months ever, the Nintendo Switch managed to beat sales for both the PS4 and Xbox One consoles last month in North America.
NPD sales were shared by Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg on Twitter. He posted the following message: “Thank you to everyone who helped support @Xbox One this holiday, @npdgroup just reported our highest Xbox One December console share ever, looking forward to a big 2018! Was trying to just thank folks for supporting us and the incredible success following the launch of Xbox One X. But yes Xbox outsold PS4 in December for Gen 8 consoles according to NPD data, while Nintendo also had a great month as Switch had most overall units.”
The big three of consoles are doing well. Microsoft released the new Xbox One X back in November and 4K TV owners are loving it so far. Nintendo is also doing extremely well as the Switch has become a hit as much as the original Wii. The bad dream of the Wii U is all in the past.
Sony is still on top this generation with 73 million PS4 consoles sold to date. This includes the original console, the Slim console as well as the more powerful PS4 Pro model. Sony is on top thanks to a host of excellent first party exclusives as well as strong partnerships with third party publishers.
2018 should continue the success of all three console makers. The first half of 2018 is looking stacked and we should know more games released later this year by the time E3 2018 rolls around. Which consoles do you own and do you plan on buying more in the near future?
