Even though the 3DS video game of Detective Pikachu will be out in Western countries later this year, a Hollywood movie is getting released in 2019 featuring many Hollywood stars. The newest actor to join the movie is none other than Ken Watanabe.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Ken Watanabe will play an original character that is written specifically for him. His character’s name will be Detective Yoshida so he might be helpful to Detective Pikachu who will be the focal point of the film.
Watanabe first was known to Hollywood audiences when he starred in the Tom Cruise movie called The Last Samurai. He has since starred in many other big movies such as Batman Begins, Inception, Godzilla (2014) plus being the voice of Drift in Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight.
The voice of Detective Pikachu will be done by Ryan Reynolds who is mostly known today for starring in the very funny 2016 film Deadpool. Younger cast joining the movie are Justice Smith who is starring in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Kathryn Newton who has appeared on the Supernatural TV show.
The director is Goosebump’s Rob Letterman with filming set to commence in London next month. The story is basically Justice Smith’s character trying to find his missing father. This is where Detective Pikachu comes in to investigate what is happening.
The film is coming out in May 2019 so there’s still a lot of time left until it comes out. Hopefully the movie can still make a lot of money at the Box Office next Summer because it will be releasing a few weeks after Avengers 4. Video games need a hit movie because the genre has failed at the Box Office multiple times already.
