Market research company, NPD Group, reckons 2017 could be the year Xbox outsells the PS4. This is thanks to the release of Project Scorpio later this year.
NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella spoke about his analysis during an interview with Game Industry. He said: “I remain bullish on the Scorpio in the US market, particularly in the launch year. I think Scorpio has the potential to push Xbox One sales ahead of the PS4 in the US in 2017. Adoption among the core gaming audience could be significant”
Bear in mind he’s only talking about the USA market. In Europe and Japan, the Sony PS4 could still be the best selling console of 2017. Piscatella’s reasoning for Scorpio edging ahead is that he feels 4K could eventually be a market that will be adopted in the long run.
4K is still a niche market as not everyone owns a 4K TV yet. Not to mention not every video game, movie and TV show is released in 4K yet. The release of the PS4 Pro and Scorpio later this year could help consumers get excited in 4K technology though.
