External hard drive support is finally coming to the PS4 later this year. It will be featured in system update 4.50, along with lots of other new features on the table.
Sony outlined many of the new features of update 4.50 via the PlayStation Blog. External hard drive support is the biggest one. An external hard drive with USB 3.0 can be used and it supports sizes up to a whopping 8TB. Sony did note that save files are still stored internally. External support is for games and apps that take lots of room.
Another cool feature is custom backgrounds are coming to the PS4. This has been a feature of computers and even the PS3 for a very long time. Now you can finally put your own image on your console instead of buying themes or leaving it blank.
They have also simplified the Quick Menu Refresh and Notification List. Improvements on the PlayStation Network Activity Feeds have also been implemented. Lastly, PlayStation VR owners can finally watch 3D Blu-rays through the device. This is cool as you no longer need to own a 3DTV to watch 3D movies.
The new update on PS4 will be coming out later this year. There’s still no release date, but expect it to come in the coming weeks/months. It will go through a beta phase soon so more testing is being done.
