Final Fantasy XV might be doing great in Western countries, but its debut was kind of soft in its native country of Japan. The sales aren’t as hot as previous direct entries.
Media Create (via NeoGaf) has revealed that Final Fantasy XV sold 690,471 units at launch in Japan. This is way down from the 1,501,964 units sold in Japan for Final Fantasy XIII. That number is for the PS4 version as only 3,700 units were sold for Xbox One.
This is not a sign of the series getting unpopular, it’s just the fact that Japanese gamers prefer mobile and handheld gaming. For some reason unlike the West, home consoles are not as popular as they once were in Japan. It’s probably why Nintendo is making the hybrid Switch. That way, more Japanese people can play video games on the go.
It is probably another reason why Final Fantasy XV is catered towards a Western audience. Westerner prefer more action orientated video games over the turn-based style.
