Drakengard 3/NieR
Studio cavia’s final two games (they disbanded after the release of NieR and were brought back together to finish the Drakengard trilogy on PS3) were undoubtedly polarizing even to fans of the JRPG genre. Both featured hack and slash action with unique gameplay tweaks, such as boss fights that felt like bullet hell sections in a shmup or even evolving into rhythm sections for a nigh impossible challenge. Drakengard 3 showed promise but its use of Unreal Engine 3 proved troublesome as the title did not run smoothly on the PlayStation 3 for most of the game, even dipping into single digits during the more hectic segments. By putting it into more powerful hardware and optimizing the code, Square Enix could turn this sadistic action RPG into something more memorable in their library. Giving NieR the same critique and polish before including it on the same disc as Drakengard 3 could only sweeten the deal.
