Just the other day, an overview for Watch Dogs on PlayStation.com said to “experience Watch_Dogs in a way that only PS4 can provide, at 60 Frames Per Second in 1080p.” However, that listing was magically reduced to “experience Watch_Dogs in a way that only PS4 can provide,” without the last part. Sadly, Ubisoft has now confirmed that the game will only clock in at 30 FPS in 900p on the PlayStation 4.
Ubisoft also confirmed that the Xbox One version of Watch Dogs will run at 30 FPS as well in 792p in a post on their website, which also includes some quotes from Creative Director Jonathan Morin about why they chose to go with only 30 FPS with sub-1080p.
Resolution is a number, just like framerate is a number. All those numbers are valid aspects of making games. But you make choices about the experience you want to deliver. In our case, dynamism is everything. Exploration and expression are everything. You want to have a steady framerate, but you want to have dynamism at the core of the experience.
Look for Watch Dogs to finally release in less than two weeks on May 27 for a variety of platforms.
