When Tomodachi Life was announced awhile back, who would have possibly thought that the game would garner a lot of controversy prior to its release in the US. When this wacky life simulation game released back in April in Japan, what was said to be a glitch where you could regender a male into a female, which allowed for pseudo same-sex relationships. However, this was patched out as a result of not being meant to be in the game, which led to some controversy and a large petition asking it to be added for the US release next month.
Sadly, Nintendo has revealed that there is no way they could go and make such a “significant development” to the game at this point and apologized as a result. In a statement on their official website, they continued to say:
At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.
Now, we will have to wait and see if this feature is included in the next entry, which I’m sure will lead to controversy of its own of course in this day and age. Look for Tomodachi Life to release for the Nintendo 3DS on June 6 in the US.
