While movies based on video games have always struggled to interpret the source material well on the big screen, studios have still continued to try over the years with better attempts like Prince of Persia. We even have the upcoming World of Warcraft movie that is about to finish wrapping, along with the Assassin’s Creed movie with some big names behind it coming in the next few years as well. One of the franchises that gamers have wanted to see transition to the big screen for awhile has been Mass Effect, and we might have just gotten a release date for it, without it even formally announced.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has announced that a “secret” film will be releasing on November 4, 2016. This movie that they are calling an “Untitled 2016 Event Project” is not a sequel, but rather “may be based on underlying intellectual property.”
The other piece of information that we know is that it is being co-financed by Legendary Pictures, who is in charge of the World of Warcraft movie and also owns the rights to Mass Effect. With World of Warcraft wrapping soon, could they be jumping straight to another video game property so quickly? This is all speculation at this point, but it is at least a possibility based on some of the clues. With the release date about a year and a half away, news of what this project is likely will be coming soon, so stay tuned.
