Another thing I didn’t like about this game is that it’s way too short. There are only 14 main missions in the game, and some of those missions are not very long to complete. It’s also disappointing that some of the villains that appear in the game only show up for one fight. Electro was pretty cool in the movie, but hardly gets any screentime here in the game. Black Cat doesn’t have a big part in this game either. Gwen Stacey is not even in the game at all!
If you liked the movies, you’ll be kind of sad that this game doesn’t really have any relation to other than its title. None of the actors provide their voices or even likenesses to this game. The stories behind Electro and Green Goblin in this game have been changed and have nothing to do with the film as well. I do like however that other characters from the Spider-Man universe appear in the game. Still if you liked the movies, you’ll find it disappointing the game has little relation to it.
The side-missions are all pretty much the same and can get boring after a while. Spider-Man will again have to chase down speeding cars, save people from burning buildings and fight bad guys. New York is again the setting which is nice, but nothing Spider-Man fans haven’t seen before. If you’ve played Spider-Man 2 back in 2004, it’s the same old New York City. I know there’s not much a game developer can do since Spider-Man lives in New York, but seeing the same city after three or four games gets tiresome. That’s why the Grand Theft Auto games are cool since it’s a new city to explore with each new game. With each new Spider-Man game, you’re greeted with the same location…
Quite possibly the best feature of the entire game is the comic store that Stan Lee owns. When you visit his shop, you can view all of the unlockables you have obtained. You can collect comic books throughout the city so you can read some of the comics. There are also posters and action figures you can view here too. You can even play on the arcade machine to do fighting challenges. It’s a nice place to hang out after you have completed the very short main campaign.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is not a bad game; it’s just that it takes Spider-Man games to step backwards. The previous game had a superior campaign and story, plus better fighting mechanics. The only thing the sequel did right was improve on the web slinging and that’s about it. New York City looks the same as always, plus the graphics are mediocre. If you own a PS4 or Xbox One, you would think you’re playing on the PS3 or Xbox 360 instead. If you’re a hardcore Spider-Man fan (like me) you will find spots of enjoyment in this game. If you’re a casual fan, this is better off just being a weekend rental at best.
